She's home!! (Got a hamster)
I got my Syrian hamster yesterday.
I'm already in love with her, she is such a little cutie.
Struggling to come up with a name, have had a few ideas but nothing feels right yet. Will share name and a photo when I can.
She was active yesterday evening, was on her wheel a lot and exploring, haven't seen her yet today but I'm not surprised.
She is white with a black head (white chin) and black patches on her back. I think her coat colour is Dominant spot, I can't wait to introduce her properly
I'm smitten already.

Meet Pippin

Thank you souffle, and thank you to who wrote that guide, I'm not good with computers and I found that easy to follow.

Re: She's home!! (Got a hamster)
Thanks
I do have a question, Pippin came home Wednesday, and as already mentioned she was out a lot and very active, saw her on Thursday, but haven't seen her since. She came across as confident, wasn't freezing or hiding from me when I was moving around.
To start getting her used to me, do I need to just wait for her to show herself, or should I disturb her?
Also how long should I leave it before finding her toilet area etc?

Re: She's home!! (Got a hamster)
she's absolutely gorgeous!!!
I'm not sure about disturbing her or waiting it out but I do know that I remember other people saying the same thing, so at least you know that it's not only Pippin, and that this behavior is common. Maybe putting in key words about the issue in the search option and see what comes up.
as for finding her toilet area, I personally just wait until it becomes obvious, or until the 1st cage clean to see where they prefer going but for most of hamsters, they chose to just use the sandbox regardless of where it was put. unfortunately, my Syrian hamster chose to make herself about 5 toilets (one of which is her sandbox) so it can be hard to keep up with all of them, and another hamster of mine decided she's above having a set place and uses the entire cage as her toilet, but I do have one extremely obedient hamster who will only use his sandbox as a toilet (never thought my only boy would be the neatest!!) so I guess just wait it out and see?
good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply
I am biased but yes, she is gorgeous isn't she.
I could hear her moving around under the substrate this morning, so I'm going to take that as a sign she is starting to get more confident and leave her to show herself, unless someone tells me otherwise, or it gets to the point I need to clean the cage.
In regards cleaning the cage, I can't smell anything at the moment which is really good, but as soon as I can smell something I'll go looking.
Pippin has a sand box, but she only just found it/used it last night, looks like she only used it for digging, maybe had a roll, but I'm hoping she'll start using it as a toilet, but we shall see, I'm just glad she has finally been in it!
