Default Lost inerest in his wheel

My syrian male hamster has lost all interest in using his wheel for some reason.

I installed a digital counter earlier this year so I know he is not using it at all. It's a large wheel with fast bearings (modded it) so it works great.

All other activities seem normal. He eats what I put out, uses his sand box, runs around and is active during the night although not quite as much as before. I see him on the camera and he is not overweight or acting different.

I removed the wheel a few days ago and made some changes to his above-ground area. He seemed to take to it immediately.

This weekend I plan to buy a "flying saucer" type of wheel... the one that sits at an angle... to see if that peaks his interest.

Do they just get tired using it after a while? Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

Had him since mid February 2022.

Thanks!

I would recommend against a flying saucer type wheel. They really don't allow for a proper natural running position and don't replace a proper upright wheel.

It's entirely possible for overall activity to slow down as a hamster ages even around a year old which can also impact wheel use. I would just put the upright wheel back in anyways so he has the option to use it if he wants to.

Chances are things are most likely completely fine. One thing that can have an impact on overall activity would be if temperatures get too cold where he's kept, so I would also check that if you haven't especially during the night and early morning hours.

Alright.

I put his wheel back. Maybe he's just getting tired in his old age. I know the feeling.

BTW: I keep it around 70 degrees F in his room.

I would try and get the temperature between 72-74 since 70 is on the colder side.
