Default Teddy Bear vs Syrian

We hired a new girl at my job and she swears there's a difference between teddy bear hamsters and syrian hamsters. Teddy bears are 2x the size of syrians according to her, but I always though teddy bear hamster was just the nickname for syrians. Truth?

They're both the same species including how big they can grow. Teddy bear is just a marketing term that tends to be used by questionable breeders & pet stores for a variety of reasons.

Yes they’re the same species - they’re all Syrian hamsters. I think it’s generally the long haired Syrians they call “teddy bear” hamsters.

Syrians can come with various types of coats. Short hair, long hair, satin coat (a particularly shiny short hair) and Rex (wavy hair). And a variety of different colours, from breeding over the decades. Originally they were all “golden “ hamsters. Below is a list of all the variations of fur type and colour within the Syrian hamster species.

This article is by a bona fide breeder and explains it well. They also explain the dangers of some of the marketing terms used to sell Syrians by giving them different names like teddy bear , black bear and so on. I think your friend would find it very interesting and useful.

It's a great piece isn't it? I always found it fascinating. I guess long haired hamsters might look bigger because they have more fur!

In terms of size - Syrians can vary hugely in size - from a whopping 300g for a large Syrian, down to 100g for a small one. This is partly genetics (as with people - tall and short people) and partly due to bad factory breeding and environment (those hamsters tend to come out smaller). But it's not always down to breeding.
