If you do go for a home built, i'd recommend building it with a front opening, meshed door for extra ventilation. Maybe not the whole front panel but a top half panel to allow for deep substrate at the bottom front panel. All our hamsters live in barred cages with large front doors so they can walk out by themselves and smell their surroundings and humans. It gives them more of an opportunity to interact.
Like Serendipity, i prefer barred cages.
