Default This video on YouTube…

Hey,
I just saw this awful video on YouTube:

I am pretty sure my lonely dwarf hamster has more space than all of those hamsters together. They're also all different species. Just broke my heart and thanks to such people it'll be even more difficult to convince others that hamsters can't live together.
I also never give cucumber skin to my hamster… I feel like I'm not the worst hamster anymore. My hamster has been doing fine and I guess he's happy.

I see the youtuber is a hamster breeder and very famous. Their videos often come up as a recommendation to me.

The hamsters are all Syrian so the same species and it seems they are babies which is why they are together.

I do agree this looks cruel.

I do give my hamster cucumber with skin on though.

I get recommended their videos a lot too, they breed their hamsters and I believe that is all one litter and they are still babies which is why they are still altogether.
Seems they did this for entertainment value rather than actually making sure each hamster had enough cucumber.

What's wrong with cucumber skin? I always give it with the skin on.

I don't really see anything wrong with the video.

Anyone who has kept a social rodent will know they will argue over food and steal from each other even when there's enough to go around, just for the sake of it! I wouldn't expect baby Syrians to be any different.

Agree it’s not nice seeing them fighting over the cucumber. It would have been better to put put out a large dish with lots of cubes in so they could feed round it and have one each. I’ve seen how Souffle puts out a dish full of veg for litters.

Nothing wrong with cucumber skin I think - I’ve always left it on . I have to say one bit did make me laugh - when the Mother had a slice and a baby wouldn’t let go of it. But I take your point it was done for entertainment value and perhaps not a good example of how to feed veg to a litter.

I've read that hamsters can choke on a cucumber skin and it's better to cut it off and not give it to a hamster.
Was that wrong?

Ooh, some of them looked like my dwarf, so I thought they're different species.

I also feed cucumber with the skin on and apple.

This video is heavily edited and sped up to make everything look more dramatic. The babies are likely to be in this bin cage for the duration of the video only. Baby hamsters are very lively and will squabble over food which is all part of growing up. Don't worry about it.

If you ever come across a video that shows animal abuse, report it to youtube immediately.
Don't show it on here because that is exactly what those awful people want.

This video by the same person is a bit more educational about separating hamsters and play fighting. They are certainly very creative videos with entertainment value but this one does seem educational as well. I’m not keen on the glass jars in this one for visual effect but the baby hamsters seem quite happy to be snuggled together.

Isn't this actually good for their socialization? I agree the bin is bare and hopefully they're housed much better. But until they're old enough to need separation, I thought they learn a good deal from interacting with their litter-mates?
