Default Perslane safe for hamsters?

Been seeing/reading good things about a weed called perslane, as it's known here in the US.

Since I'm in to growing microgreens in the winter for my salads I will look into growing this, as well.

Usually found near sidewalks in dry sunny spots, I spotted some this eveniNg walking Chester (my dog) so I dug it up and took it home to plant in a tray.

Question: This is known as a super food with all kinds of benefits you can erad about if you're interested... but if it's safe enough for humans to eat can I give some to my hamster?

That is, will he shun something he knows is not good for him so that I have little to worry about in doing so?

Thanks

I don't think he would shun it if it's not good for him. Hamsters will nibble on houseplants given the chance and they aren't good for them.

I've never heard of this weed so can't comment on it.

There's some info on this link that might help - lists all safe plants - it does say purslane is an unsure one. I sometimes give ours a bit of parsley or a clover flower from the garden grass. Marigolds, cornflowers are ok too and rose petals (although they rarely seem to eat those but go potty for the clover - only white clover though - red clover is too medicinal so could have risks). Dandelion root is safe and good for them in moderation, as is burdock.

I tried giving one of mine some white willow bark when he was elderly and couldn't have metacam due to contraindications - it's a natural source of aspirin and thought it could help with pain relief and couldn't do much harm as he was old and failing. However he just sniffed it and didn't eat it.

Safe flowers and herbs?

Looking at Google it seems it is safe for hamsters and has been used by people for a number of pets. Providing it hasn't been sprayed with chemicals. Bear in mind though that many herbs are also medicinal. So I'd be cautious with a female hamster as it can affect uterine functions (reduce bleeding apparently). Although it's supposed to be beneficial for diabetes - so could be helpful for diabetic hamsters.

Gave him a few sprigs of purslane last evening and it was gone this rmorning.

Seems he has changed his diet to mostly eating the fresh veggies I give him rather than the seed mix. I still leave some out but he does not seem to touch it from one day to the next.

With winter coming I plan to grow the purslane in the house along with my microgreens. I will have sunflower and will try transplanting some dandylion greens from outside.

He loves those, as well.

It is lovely to get an update of him. Does he have a name now?

We do not see each other at all. He never comes out when I'm in that room and only hours after I leave his food in the evening.

Wish things could have worked out better

Funny thing is, when I first got him and had him in the bedroom where the cat could watch him he was out all the time. Could care less about the cat. Think he liked all the attention.

However, I was told, here and elswhere, that was a bad idea so I moved him to a room at the back of the house. Door closed...no cat.

I am sorry. My hamster is the same. He plans his whole routine on me going to bed and waking. If I wake later he will stay up later.

I notice at first hamsters are out more and later on do not. Maybe once they feel settled they are comfortable staying underground.

Hi Chesterpal, it’s a shame you don’t get to see him much, but guessing your still using your cameras to catch him on the move? Is he still a whizz in his wheel.
