Well done! You must have had a lot of tin foil.

Just a thought. Could the reflection cause a fire?

From what i read, temp wise tin foil is not going to catch on fire.
as for the reflection - it's flat up against the glass and i can;t find anything that says it will start fires.

I know what you mean - it's not temperature, it's whether a prism of the sun could shine on it. Remember that school experiement using something as a prism to set a plastic bag on fire?

On the other hand, tin foil is supposed to be heat resistant! I'd just check no sunlight beams could bounce off a mirror or window onto it.

Yes, I would wonder whether tin foil could reflect and focus light in such a way as to melt or set something else on fire though? They happened with a curved shaped skyscraper (the Walkie Talkie) in London which melted a car.

Also make sure the tin foil isn't going to dazzle drivers if the window faces a road. I thought about doing it but my room faces a road with a blind bend in it so I'm not sure if it would be safe. You can alternatively use cardboard which wouldn't be as effective as it will absorb rather than reflect the heat but should still help.

yes a friend has used cardboard and blankets before,
good point about dazzling drivers, mines on a room that doesn't overlook anyone.
i remember that about the walkie talkie building - i saw it being built as i used to work near it.
i'm sure mention of it came up when i researched this whole thing, but can;t remember what it said now.

If I remember correctly, hamsters start to struggle with the temperature once it hits 30°C. Like all animals they can adapt if the temps creep up slowly though. I have nothing to add to keeping hamsters cool as I think everything I do has already been mentioned.

Just a thought, but if anyone can, can you put out dishes of water for the wildlife as they'll struggle too. I have 4 dotted around the back garden and was going to put some out the front. Keep these out of direct sunlight and refresh regularly. Place them by bushes or trees, somewhere with cover so wildlife will be more likely to use it.

That is very thoughtful and a lovely idea. I know hedgehogs are struggling right now.

Just reading through this thread, it is a bit of a worry. Hams has been appearing at his usual time but I have noticed him pop out in the day for a drink which he doesn’t always do or maybe I’ve not noticed before. I think having some kind of air circulating in the room would help. I checked Hams nest area yesterday and noticed he’d dug deeper, so hoping it helps. Take care all.
