I think that, like with humans, it also depends on the individual hamster. Rodney and Rory are sleeping in their houses, the dwarfs who knows where, Jack is sleeping in his wicker tunnel and Clive in his sand jar. I think Clive is the only one who looks a bit bothered because he gives us looks when we enter the room. Just chilling a melon.

I've never noticed any changes in behaviour or sleeping habits in a Robo and that also applies to cold weather.
I read somewhere that Robos are the most tolerant to environmental changes of all the hamster species.

They really are hardy little things.

You can put ice cubes/cold water in front of the fan too. obviously do it a safe way and also not pointed at the hamsters directly. i keep curtains and blinds shut, till cooler, but i do open windows and doors to try and keep air circulated.
me and my friend had a discussion the other week about those reflective things you use in cars to stop it getting so hot and i did a bit of research and there is this product you can get in australia which you can put on your windows which reflects the heat but still lets you see out of the windw, sadly not been able to find any =thing similar in the uk, apart from something that you stick on the whole window but stops you seeing out (maybe i think- cant remember now) it would be an interesting experiment to see if i could get a reflective panel thing and if it reduced the temperature in the hamster room.

I might try some tin foil in some cardboard in the windows!!!!
Thank you. Orko did eat some cucumber last night.

Sometimes they find ceramic chilled in the fridge too cold so you can try room temperature ceramic things as well. It will still absorb heat away from them.

I also put frozen cool packs on top of cages to create a cooler area underneath.

Keep all curtains and blinds closed before it starts getting hot, until the late evening. As much as possible, keep the heat out of the house in the first place.
Thank you. It is good to hear you find hamsters seem okay despite the heat.

It is really good to hear robos are tolerant to the environmental changes. Orko did not get up until 2AM which is very late for him. He was very active though.

I shouldn't worry too much. There are members live in non Uk countries that have these kind of temperatures, as the norm in summer. As others say, you're doing what you can.

And they are hardy little things. It's not pleasant for them but if they know they have somewhere to cool off it helps. I think rotating mugs in the fridge and swapping them over is good - then they always have somewhere cold to sit and cool off. It's surprising how quickly the mugs stop being cold! So overnight leaving a bag of frozen peas on top of the cage could help too. Fan is a good idea.

We don't have a fan but live in an older place with stone walls and smallish windows so it doesn't get too hot inside usually. Downstairs at least - upstairs it does.

yes i agree, but also a lot of those other countries have air con, or at least got fans etc, when it happens in a country that doesn't normally get these temps we aren't often prepared.

Thank you for this. I envy your stone walls.

That was my worry. I do not have air con and I cannot afford to have it installed.

In the southern US, weather outside can be absolutely miserable at times but anything that would go towards 38c(extremely hot and beyond the point where hamsters would be in danger) isn't necessarily a typical thing. Air conditioning does a lot of good though so outside temperatures getting very high don't mean the inside of the houses themselves are so extremely hot.

Even 28c is at the point where I'd be worried for hamsters if I'm honest and you'd really need to find some sort of way to keep temperatures lower just to be completely safe.

Blackout curtains can be a really good investment too for helping to lower temperatures a little. They're still not a perfect solution though especially with extremely high temperatures and I would also do other things on top of having them like at the bare minimum keeping fans running.

I have noticed in the USA they say hamsters should not be in temperatures higher then 26c but in the UK people say different.
