Default Heatwave

With the scary news about the temperatures going to reach 38c I am very worried about Orko. I know to put ceramic hides in the fridge, provide water etc. I put his sand in the fridge and saw he barely used it.

I have a fan but read not to aim it directly at the cage so I am not sure what help it will be. Orko does not use his cool tile and rarely uses the ceramic hides.

It has been 28c in my flat for 2 weeks. Luckily he seems fine with this but I am really worried about Monday and Tuesday. I looked at mini air conditioning units but they are around £300.

What are other members going to do?

I close the blinds or curtains to keep the sun out. I've tried chilling ceramic etc but our hamsters won't use them either. I give them a little chilled watermelon during the day. I have large ceiling fans in all rooms and may keep them on on a low setting during the day. Turned it on last night but Jack kept sniffing upwards and became a bit agitated. Don't think he appreciated the breeze so turned it off again.

In the wilds, hamsters burrow down to escape from the elements. I think that they pretty much self regulate their body temperature but may sleep in different locations.

Thank you. This is reassuring. I also keep blinds closed all day.

I had the air con of my car fixed, just in case a hamster needs to see a vet! Wouldn't have bothered just for myself.

you pretty much doing everything you can. i add cucumber, i know a lot of people's hamsters come out to find cooler spots to sleep, but like Ria says, mine just seem to burrow down
You can put ice cubes/cold water in front of the fan too. obviously do it a safe way and also not pointed at the hamsters directly. i keep curtains and blinds shut, till cooler, but i do open windows and doors to try and keep air circulated.
me and my friend had a discussion the other week about those reflective things you use in cars to stop it getting so hot and i did a bit of research and there is this product you can get in australia which you can put on your windows which reflects the heat but still lets you see out of the windw, sadly not been able to find any =thing similar in the uk, apart from something that you stick on the whole window but stops you seeing out (maybe i think- cant remember now) it would be an interesting experiment to see if i could get a reflective panel thing and if it reduced the temperature in the hamster room.

I might try some tin foil in some cardboard in the windows!!!!

It is worrying. In past years I've found hamsters are generally ok because they sleep through it, though it hasn't been nearly as hot.

Sometimes they find ceramic chilled in the fridge too cold so you can try room temperature ceramic things as well. It will still absorb heat away from them.

I also put frozen cool packs on top of cages to create a cooler area underneath.

Keep all curtains and blinds closed before it starts getting hot, until the late evening. As much as possible, keep the heat out of the house in the first place.

You could try one of those reflective car sun screens on a window. I had the car ones for the car before but couldn't tell any difference.

good point Sushi, i wrap freezer blocks up in a towel and place on the outside of the cage next to the sleeping area-
