Orko may have jumped rather than slipped. Great to see him hamstering about.

Thank you Ria. He is a bit nervous so I just worried the branch was a bit scary for him.

Sometimes when I watch Orko it looks like the camera is speeded up. He is so fast. Recently he has started scratching at the glass of his cage. My partner said he may not realise it is glass and does not understand how he cannot get passed it. In this clip you can see at the beginning he scratches at the glass. Later on he tries to use his water bottle in an interesting way.

I think your partner is right. I wouldn't worry about it.

This water bottle seems to work very well for Orko and the little disc fits him perfectly.

Thank you. You always manage to reassure me. I really appreciate your help.

It is a little cork disc yet it makes a lot of difference to him.

Last night I was talking to Orko and realised he feels very safe in his wheel and he is fine if I am there as long as he is in his wheel. He will even lie down in it. I wondered if I could offer him food while he is in there but this was a mistake as he panicked. I will not try that again. Here is a clip of him going from the wheel to getting food. I see he does this throughout the night. It is very cute.

Offering food with fingers or on the palm of the hand can be part of the taming process, especially with Robos.
Running away is part of it as well. Even fairly confident Robos who are used to humans and their hands like our Scottie, still instinctively run away and then come back.

I wouldn't worry about sending Orko into a panic because i don't think that you did. Not if you want to introduce him to humans. That takes a lot of patience and time. It took my first Robo three months to take seeds from my hand and that was as far as we got. I put my hand flat in his tank a few times per week but didn't move my hand at first. He used to hide behind his wheel but eventually became brave enough to have a quick sniff before running off again. It very very slowly progressed from there.

I found that it was easier with Monty and Scottie because of their barred cages with front access. They were able to smell me when i sat near their cage talking to them and my hand reached in from the front and not from above.

I haven't spent much time trying to introduce foster Robo Finley to human hands but do put my hand in from time to time while talking to him. He got as far as a quick sniff which is progress.

If you feel that you'd prefer to have a Robo to watch only, that's fine but if you would like to give socializing a go, then you'd need to make a conscious effort to do so.

Well, that's my take on Robob "taming" and that's really all it is.

Very nice video of a busy Orko. I understand that you may feel that you could knock Orko's confidence by introducing your hand but if done in a non threating way it should be ok.

Thank you for giving me your perspective. I am relieved not to have knocked Orko's confidence. I am happy for him to be a watch only hamster but if he was able to take food from me that that would be lovely. I was worried he would loose his trust in me if I carried on.

I usually just have my hand flat in his cage for him to check it out in his own time. This is the first time I have put it close to him which is why I thought I may have done the wrong thing.

I have all the patience and time in the world for Orko so I am happy to carry on offering my hand.

I am pleased you liked the video. It is so sweet you watch and comment on his thread.

You could offer your hand with a piece of tofu on it.

I enjoy watching Orko's videos and can see how he's thriving in your care.

I will do that. You know Orko well as you know he loves tofu. Lol

I was thinking, I am only used to rabbits and guinea pigs and with them if you offer them food etc and they run away, you leave it for a while. I have to learn that robos are different. It took me 2 years before I could pet my rabbit and it was so worth the wait.

Thank you so much for saying that. That has made me so happy.
