Default Cleaning Advice

Hey guys, I've had my little hamster for a bit over two weeks and it seems like there's a bathroom area that's due for cleaning which is a bit trickier to get to.

Her spot is right in her main burrow chamber where she sleeps. I have the good fortune to actually see it through the bin's plastic, and that bedding is noticeably yellow.

She is pretty tame, but doesn't like being out of the enclosure one bit. How should I handle this with my new ham to minimize her stress/upset her the least?

It’s okay to spot clean places like that. With Mitzi if ever I clean any of her home area I normally wait until later when she wakes up so she’ll be out in the main enclosure and I’ll just quickly do her home bit.

Just I wouldn’t remove any massive sections of bedding at this stage it’s too early but spot cleaning toilet areas shouldn’t be a problem.

It's got to be done and that's just it.

I'd advise the same as Lilafernim and spot clean the damp bedding out when she's awake. Hamsters usually keep a hoard near or under their nests which has to be removed or part of it, if it's damp and pee'd on. If not, i'd leave the hoard.
Should you have to remove the hoard, make sure you put a little fresh mix down in the same spot so she won't feel robbed.

Hamsters react differently to their human cleaners, some aren't that bothered and some throw tantrums. However Pearl's going to react, keep in mind that she'll soon get over it. Hamsters don't bear grudges and she'll still love you.

I would maybe leave it another week If it's not smelly. When they get older they sometimes chuck smelly bedding out themselves and do a bit of their own housekeeping.

Then perhaps wear a rubber glove. I used to do that when spot cleaning pee out of a nest because the rubber glove didn't smell of me when I did it with my hand, my hand became an enemy for a while. Also keeps your hand clean ha ha.

I'd also not be too thorough. Maybe just take a handful of damp bedding but don't try and remove every bit of it. Leave some for another time, so she gets used to it not being a major excavation each time. Hopefully her hoard will not be in the same place and that can be left.

Thank you so much guys, this is awesome advice. I'm going to put in practice tonight, fortunately since she's had her new wheel she's been super active and out most of the time.

I was able to do it while she was completely distracted in her food dish. It probably could have gone a few days more, but some bits were pretty yellow.

She did later find out, and threw a tantrum when I was over there. Kicked around the bedding in our play area. No bites, and still pretty tame so I'm taking it as a win.
