@cloudy - his fur is just getting longer..he has a long ‘skirt’ around his bottom…I do have to brush him, I have a little brush that fits on my finger so I stroke/brush him…I try to do this on clean out day…

@snowy-syrian - your hamster is so lovely…that’s funny..I was thinking the exact same thing …ours are both white…and apparently ghosts….

I did not know you could get a finger brush. It sounds brilliant.

Yes..I got it from pets at home…he sometimes gets his bedding stuck in his fur around his bottom so it’s really helpful and it’s soft rubber so not harsh.. and he thinks he’s just being stroked!

Well last night when I cleaned him I discovered something interesting! As I’ve mentioned when he does actually come out it’s rarely for long and he clambers home pretty quickly.

His cage is inside a big pen and when I first got him and he did want to come out more he used to go behind the cage..but I found it difficult to reach him so I blocked the sides of the cage so he couldn’t go behind it.

Last night for the first time in ages I unblocked the sides..and voila..he stayed out for over an hour….mostly behind the cage but he was scenting…washing…and just relaxed.

Periodically I would pick him up for a cuddle and put him at the far side of the pen so he had to go through all his toys to get to the sides again..which he happily did.

He seemed to enjoy it more and twice I put him near his steps up to his cage (essentially the cage door) and he clambered back down in to the pen!

That was so good we both enjoyed him so much..hubby had cuddles too!

That is wonderful news! It is a good idea to have his cage inside his pen so he can go in and out himself.

Yes cloudy..it was so good! Not sure he'll want to come out tonight..last night was clean out night when I actually bring his whole shoebox out and put it in the pen to clean his cage..so really I kinda force him out....but it was definitely progress when he actually climbed down into pen...not up...into cage...so he must have been enjoying it yay

It's great having the cage in the pen...I prefer him to choose when he comes and goes...so much less stress for us both... in total he occupies a fairly large space in one room.

Just wish he would come more than go...lol ..I have plans to move his location soon..got to remove a brick bar first that's built in that room....it'll be a bit quieter for him...

Well last night Snowy was out at around 1:30am, so I opened the cage to give him a little piece of apple, which he completely ignored and then ran up my arm onto my shoulder! So to avoid him falling, I quickly took him over to the sofa, where he spent some time exploring (with me terrified the whole time that he was going to jump off or burrow under the sofa cushions and I'd never see him again!). I guess he's had enough of being a 'ghost hamster' and decided he wants to see the world!
