Re: My long haired syrian never comes out!
Hi Julie, our hamster also lives in the room next to our living room which has the telly and his cage is on the same back wall. I’ve only a few places where his cage will fit and would’ve thought he’s probably used to hearing our general house noise and the telly. Did your other hamsters live in the same place as your current hamster? He sounds very content when you do see him, he’s just comfy doing his own thing

Re: My long haired syrian never comes out!
Stanza..thank you for reply….no..all my other hamsters lived in my bedroom with complete silence as such..but at that time I spent more time in my room…with a bit more noise..this is the first hamster I’ve had downstairs…relatively close to tv….hope he’s used to the noise by now….it worries me

Re: My long haired syrian never comes out!
Julie:
You might want to consider purchasing a night vision camera so you can record his nighttime time activities and then watch them when you are awake.
The one I have (under $20) records 12 second clips to the cloud all night long. I can see what he's been up to when I'm having my coffee in the morning. Often, since I am an early riser, it can watch him "live" on me cell phone in the morning, too.
It will alert you when there is activity if you then want to go in there when he's moving about.
There was a discussion I started awhile back on this if you want to check that out.
I also installed a digital counter on his wheel so I can see how far he travels each night. It has been an eye opener to say the least! At some point, that may alert me to his changing health, if the count drops way off for a time.
Again, cheap. There is also a discussion I started, here, on that as well.

Re: My long haired syrian never comes out!
I literally came on here to ask the same question. I work late in the room where the hamster cage is so if Snowy comes out before around 2am, I'll see him - but that seems to be becoming a rarer and rarer occurrence. He empties his food bowl but must wait till I'm out of the room to do it, though I sometimes see him go for a drink. I know he runs in his wheel as I've 'caught' him a few times when I enter the room. If he's out and about, he'll take a treat from my hand, and occasionally I can tempt him into a mug to take him to his playpen, but it's gone from every day to maybe once or twice a week.
He seemed to start becoming more withdrawn after I changed his bedding from hemp to Kaytee Clean and Cosy. I was worried I'd upset him by changing too much too soon, but maybe it's just that he's enjoying it being easier to burrow and is content to stay in his burrows and have peace and quiet?
(Pic of his setup attached, plus a rare pic from when he actually shows his face!)
