Lucky boy! That's a great set up but i've always loved your set ups and looked at them for inspiration.

Aw thanks Ria. Well he's here. Boy he's a bundle of energy! He seems quite friendly and very active. Although maybe a bit skitty after his journey. He's already explored every inch of his cage, nibbled everything, dug a few tunnels, wrecked a few things, tried to push the tube up from underneath and now in his wheel. He's explored everything except the house which is strange as there's a bit of smelly cheese in there.

I've managed to get quite a few photos but most of them are probably blurred lol . I'll sort those out later.

Still not sure about the name. We'll decide tonight.

Haha, this boy sounds and behaves like a healthy, young hamster! Congratulations to your new family member. Looking forward to hear and see more of him.

It is exciting. He reminds me of Newt behaviourwise (he was also a cream). He has been thundering in his wheel. Then tunnelled under the entire cage throwing substrate all over the place. He's been everywhere except the house. If I open the cage door he doesn't run away (and once tried to get out lol). He's dragged a couple of chew sticks up into the big tunnel and thrown food everywhere and now filled his pouches so I think he's decided to build a hoard somewhere.

The entrance to the house disappeared with all his tunneling so I've popped a little tube in down to the entrance while he wasn't looking.

Still mulling over names.

For a Silent wheel, the Carolina Storm wheel makes a racket attached to the bars. It's hitting the bars because he's running in it so hard. Anyway nice to have a hamster out and about but he shouldn't be awake right now!

Do you know anything about his background and why he was surrendered to the rescue?

Could be one of the standard reasons or excuses of course.

Just that he'd been bought as a child's pet and "it didn't work out". I half expected him to be a nervous wreck and terrified of hands. I asked again today and she said the parents said the child just wasn't looking after him. He's about 3 months old apparently so they can only have had him about 4 weeks. I suspect child got bored and parents didn't want to look after the hamster. Usual thing. He seems quite used to people though and looks at you if you talk to him.

He's making real racket lol. Under the substrate.

He sounds very confident especially as he is in a new environment.

He does doesn't he. Maybe partly because he's not quite a baby and lived somewhere else but I remember Newt as a baby being like this in his new cage.

Lots of bar climbing now (looking for a way out). Jumped out of the sputnik and landed belly up (might need to think about a roof run after all!). I think they all spend the first day or so checking every inch of the cage to see if there's an escape route - but usually when you're not looking!

I'm assuming he's not interested in houses and beds just yet and more focused on building a hoard somewhere and looking for an escape route, but he has sat for a wash a few times.
