I simply cannot see how you can say a $5 sack of 50lbs of sand purchased from the home improvement store is safe when you have no idea where it's from.

I'll stick with the completely dust free river sand.

There's a lot more known to prove lack of safety with river sand than there is to disprove the safety of play sand which is extremely widely used with great success and again, as I've said multiple times in this thread, once properly processed is incredibly safe.

Ultimately not all sand is created equal, and continuing to use river sand is absolutely putting your hamster in serious danger. This isn't me saying you're a bad owner, but instead urging you to see the reality of just how unsafe your idea really is. There is nothing you could possibly do to make the river sand safe and all you're doing is adding far more hazardous things than a bit of silica dust - something I've already gone over which cannot be emphasized enough!

The other thing you may need to consider is the need for more frequent health checks otherwise you wouldn't become aware of any changes to your hamster's eyes, nose and skin until it's too late and serious damage has been done.

Do you know why river sand is dust free?

All sand is dusty when poured and then settles. It's the nature of the beast. Sand that doesn't create any dust at all would worry me more because i'd wonder what's in there that's weighing it down. I guess it could be something that shouldn't be there like toxic chemicals.

Now, i'm a dotty old lady who knows nothing about science or chemistry but when it comes to the wellbeing and safety of my beloved hamsters, i like to rely on good old common sense which tells me that river sand isn't the way to go.

Sorry Chesterpal, I am 100% with Ria and Amiytville on this one, you have no idea what or if there are any pollutants in that water. I wouldn't be risking it with my hamsters, it's just not worth the risk.
