Default Peculiar habits

Hamsters are very individual little creatures and often have peculiar habits. I thought it might be fun to share so i start it off with our dwarf Gertie and Syrian Rodney.

Gertie, will only pee in a seagrass or Pringle tube. Not in her sand or a pee spot, no, it has to be a tube.

Rodney, has stuffed his house full since he was a baby. Every time he comes out, he'll pick up a piece of substrate or toilet paper to take back in. When he starts to sleep in his ceramic hide i know that he can't get back in because there's no room left for him. So i take some bedding out and he moves straight back in.

He can't go into his coconut hide because that is full of his goodies, treasures and what's left from a stolen hoard.

They are all so individual I agree. Hammy fills his sleeping area full of his hoard so much that he is squashed into one corner but still makes an amazing dome shaped hole in which to sleep. I must attempt a photo at some point, it looks so cosy. However when I attempt to remove just the tiny bits of bed that are smelly with wee (I’ve only done this twice in 3 months) then he ignores me for 2 days and won’t come out when I feed :/ He literally appears when I switch all the lights off, funny fella This is what makes them all so individual and adorable

In his playpen we have a shoebox that he uses as a hide, he loves pushing it around from the inside which makes us laughs.

Haha, Hammy ignoring you for 2 days after you've touched his things reminds me of our late Syrian Henry.

When Henry was annoyed with me he would give me the "kiss my a..." gesture. He'd go into his coconut and stay there with his bum sticking out. He refused to budge and could not be tempted out until he got over his strop which could take ages.

Hi Ria, that’s comforting to read, maybe the male Syrians are a bit more protective of their homes. Henry sounds like a great character, happy memories to treasure. I do feel a bit sad when Hams is ignoring me, but he’s still super active when I’ve left so I can only hope he’s all good. I try not to interfere wt his bed and hoard but at the same time I have to do what I think is right.

Funny that Gertie just likes to wee in tubes and cute that she likes to keep her sand bath clean.

Had to chuckle at Rodney too filling his house to the brim that after a while he can’t squeeze in, what a fun personality trait, he’s a super home maker

Same here with the stuffing of the bed! Mitzi somehow managed to drag her chew toys through the entrances and barricades them off XD

Her morning routine is always on point also. She steps out, yoga stretches first, sluggishly walks to her food bowl and water. Goes to the back of the cage for her ‘morning shower’ then on top of her house to finish her yoga stretches. Once all pampered and ready she steps on her bridge and stands staring blankly out waiting to be let out lol. Same thing every night.

My Enigma is the same - he will only pee in a kitchen tube. Unfortunately he gets through the tubes quicker than we get through the rolls.

It shows taste if Gertie will only use a seagrass or Pringles tube!

Brilliant thread! Looking forward to reading more furry anecdotes.

Ralph has some peculiar habits, he wont socialise with anyone he doesnt know, if someone is visiting and try to talk to him if he comes out of his shell, he will peer at them and then hurtle back in to his coconut shell. When I fill his small dish with food, he has to hold one side of the dish (as im putting it back in the cage) with his teeth and I hold the other side! He pretends he cant get any water out of the bottle so I have to squeeze it first to get some drops out and then he will happily drink properly - no idea why its working perfectly!! He hates his cage being cleaned, so he will go back in after a clean and sit in the plastic tubes and sulk - close his eyes and lay upside down for ages, then if he thinks we've stopped watching him, he will hurtle backwards and forwards very noisily until one of us talks to him. He is very sweet and is so friendly and social with us. He does get out and about in the day a lot, he wakes up about 8pm and is quite active throughout the evening. He loves being hand fed sunflower seeds - no idea why its just them he likes being handfed...hes a funny little thing!!

we did have a few days of him peeing the plastic tubes last week but fingers crossed hes back to doing it in the corner of the cage, ( I put some tissue I used to mop up his wee in his cage corner to encourage him back) and he eats anything - he loves going in his plastic ball (I know some people hate them!) and he loves his sand bath and play pen although he likes to try and climb out of it after about ten minutes!

This thread has made me chuckle! Our hams are such funny little things with their funny ways. Our ham Rabbit ignores us for a period of time she deems is appropriate if we go out. She views me and my OH as her attendants whose roles are to cater for her every whim! She has also stuffed her coconut completely full with food, chew sticks and bedding. I have not figured out how she has been able to do it x

This really made me smile, super cute Ralph holds one side of the food bowl as you place it back in and the squeezing of the water bottle. Must admit our Syrian is very similar with the cleaning and will hide out in his tube pretending to ignore us when we’ve emptied his corner toilet. So nice that Ralph is so social and likes to be handled, he sounds great fun

I love reading about all the hamsters, they are all so individual. Wish there was a like button I could press for all these replies.
