Default What's for dinner?

I've been giving my hamster a small quantity of Old Fashion Quaker Oats (also called rolled oats) with his Higgins mix most feedings. He seems to like it as it's all gone each morning.

Oats are great for the digestive system. Helped my last dog with his IBD for some 15 years of his life.

I've also found he enjoys carrots shreds, broccoli, organic lettuce, hazel nuts and a small piece of aged cheddar cheese and/or dried fig.

What are you folks using for treats?

3 of our Syrians are very fond of a small dollop of porridge in the morning, cooked with water. We use the same oats as you or the Irish ones.

Tonight all of them had a bit of fresh parsley and cucumber. They also like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, romaine lettuce, carrot, bell pepper, kale, courgette, basil, brussel sprout.
The Syrians get a bit of fruit sometimes, apple, pear, grape, blueberry but our lot doesn't like soft fruit like strawberries or raspberies.

A bit of unseasoned boiled or scrambled egg is popular or a bit of plain cooked pasta (spaghetti is great for playing tug of war).

The Syrians like a grape and nut nibble stick and the dwarfs like the small cheesy ones. Millet sprays are nice treats and herbal or flowery foraging mixes. They like their whimzees of course and dandelion roots to chew on. In the summer i get fresh dandelion leaves and clover from the garden. I buy some treat thingys from the pet shop sometimes but they're not that keen on them.

They love to pinch my food when i'm sitting on the floor eating cheese crackers or a bowl of cereal. Whoever is running around will try to get some.

They seem to like it best when i hide a treat. A raisin inside a tiny cardboard box or a monkey nut strung up in a diy hanging toy, that kind of thing. Half a walnut with the nut left inside is an exciting treat too.

I’ve invented a treat called “mealworm Caesar salad” lol.

It’s mostly romaine lettuce and whatever other veg I have in the house, a few seeds, a couple of mealworms and topped with a couple of strands of grated cheese.

It is a treat and it’s mostly lettuce but creates some variety! Alternatively like Ria half a walnut. She even leaves the empty shell by her bowl for me to collect.

Porridge she had mostly in the winter but with summer coming it’s mostly salad based treats.

Bought a full coconut at the grocery store. Cracked it into small sections.

He seems to like it. Something a bit hard to chew on which I assume is good.

I still can't get mine to touch the mealworm. I also decided to make a treat with the leftover seed she refuses to eat. Mixed them in a dough made of chia flour and water. Shaped the dough into small egg shapes and Baked at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. They came out hard as stone and she seems to like them.

i love how many treat ideas i can find on this forum! I must have read every hamster book out there, but i still find new and awesome ideas on this forum all the time
just one question- is it ok if i never give my hamsters mealworms or any other insect? i mainly give hard boiled egg for protein (plus their pellets which have a lot) but is it enough? the insects gross me out too much but sometimes it feels like everyone gives them except me...

The meal worms are high in protein given their small size. I can understand your reluctance but the dried version is pretty tame. They feel like small twigs. Not squishy at all.

You'd not want to feed live worms anyway... as they can bite.

I really hate them as well, I can’t look at them or touch them. For some reason I’m more scared of them than living ones because I think they’ll unexpectedly just jump back to life!

I just keep them in the packet and tip a couple out, if I pour too many out though I have to get my OH to get the excess out lol. As long as there’s a balance I don’t think it matters the source of protein, it’s like saying to us watermelons are good, but as long as you’re having a variety of fruit you still get vitamins.

When I fed my betta fish any bloodworms, I used plastic tweezers. It can help if people do not like touching the actual blood worms.
