Default Starting a Hamster Rescue

I've been thinking for a long time that I would like to start rescuing & rehoming the animals I know a bit about. Since I got my hamster boy, I realised that the area of Devon that I am in has always struggled with rescues like this. I found topics about my area on this forum talking about it years ago and how there was no access to ethically sourced pets within 80 miles.

I want to make something accessible for my community & thought I'd start by making a Facebook group or website. I posted an ad on this pet site talking about how I'd take on unwanted rodents and rehome them to really good homes, thinking not much of it. However, less than 24 hours had passed before I got a response. I think this is something that could really benefit my area.

It's always been a dream to have my own animal sanctuary, and I think even if I could do a little now, one day I could have something bigger.

Has anyone else done this here, and if so, how is it going?

Smile Re: Starting a Hamster Rescue

I got involved in rescuing and rehoming hamsters when i volunteered for a small privately run rescue.

You can read up about it in my thread "Foster hamsters".

Every time you rescue an animal, you need to be prepared to potentially keep it for the duration of its natural life.

You need access to a good vet and a vet fund just in case you take in an ill or injured animal.

I'd give it a trial. Set up a basic habitat in a second hand Hamster Heaven with a 28cm Trixie wheel which suits all hamsters, a house, hides etc and get an unwanted hamster.

Then rehome the hamster to someone who meets ALL your criteria. Don't compromise, don't listen to promises and don't get upset if someone takes offence when you turn them down.

The hamsters i refer to as "lodgers" in my signature are in fact rescue hamsters living here and waiting to move to their forever homes.
