Smile 28cm Trixie Wheel

Hi all, I’ve recently purchased a 28cm Trixie wheel for our Syrian hamster, had it around 4 weeks now. At first we thought he really liked it but recently my OH who goes to bed late has said he’s just been sitting staring at it and when my OH has sat down next to the cage to say hi, Ham has come forward and chewed the plastic cover, so my OH took it upon himself to remove the cover and after a few sniffs investigating, Hams jumped in and off he went, running.

It’s been two nights now and we can hear him using it a lot. My question is whether those of you who use the Trixie think it’s safe without the front cover? There is a bar that sticks out but it’s not sharp and is pretty high up, I’ve been looking at it tonight and wonder if it makes the whole thing a bit more wobbly. May have to look at another wheel that’s got an open front. Perhaps Hams got used to the open front from the tiny savic one his cage came with or maybe he just doesn’t like it enclosed? Such funny characters.

They seem to have their preferences just like humans and they let us know when they're not happy with something.

I've never used the 28 Trixie wheel without the front cover but it should be safe because the spindle is too high up to touch the hamster's back. As for the stability, i think you'll just have to watch and see.

There isn't much choice in large open plastic wheels in the UK. I have this one which is 26cm/10in and fine for a smaller Syrian but most open ones are wooden ones which can be plastikoted of course. Going by the description the manufacturer is clueless (small - hamster large - rat) but it is a sturdy and smoothly spinning wheel that also attaches to a barred cage.

Niteangel and Carolina wheels have large open plastic wheels and Rodipet does one which isn't a good design for a Syrian, in my opinion. There may be others and i would be interested to know about them.

Tic Tac Wheels do make a large bucket wheel that's meant to be 13.5 inches in diameter which is above the ideal size for Syrians. They're not cheap though and on their website when I just checked I only saw the large in red, but it's still worth checking out for ideas.

They also make 12 inch metal wheels in various colors, and I wouldn't go smaller than that with Syrians just to be completely safe - something bucket wheels are severely lacking in terms of wheels like the Carolina ones which are somewhere around 10 inches or just over in diameter which isn't going to work for many Syrians as it would be too small for them to properly run with a flat back.

The savic jumbo rolly wheel is plastic and large, I am currently using that.

I also got a mouse bro large wheel I quite like but my dawrf can't quite get it moving, my review is "gemma" here

I fancy the clear niteangel but can't find an affordable way to get it in the UK

Thanks all for the speedy replies, I’ll be taking a look at these tonight

Hammy was in the wheel again last night and no probs, think I’m just a bit nervous seeing the spindle part exposed in the middle but as Ria P said, it is high up and having watched Hammy running he’s paying no attention to it at all.

For an open wheel a lot of people use this one, which is silent. It's a good wheel - our syrian had it (I had it screwed upside down in his cage). It's not expensive but ideally you need to paint the inside with plastikote.

Like everything it's gone up in price - it used to be about £11. And now £16. They're good wheels though, they have a cork running track which is nice for their feet. It has ball bearings and is silent.

It's not a big deal to paint the inside with plastikote - takes about 10 minutes, dried in a few hours. Most people do a second coat. It means it's then wipe clean and not going to get stained and stinky. Not all hams pee in their wheels but just in case.

Most of them like the enclosed wheels with the holes, but not all. The nice thing about the open wheels is they can jump out easily and flop on the substrate (ours used to like doing that). A pot of plastikote costs £4 and the small pot goes a long way - you'd use less than half of it painting the inside of the wheel - it can be used on any wood items to make them wipe clean.

This is the plastikote. It also comes in colours if you fancy a coloured wheel and painting the whole wheel (I just paint the inside as the outside is fine unpainted).

You could keep the plastic trixie wheel for a playpen item maybe = with the front on. I don't think I'd be too happy with the spindle exposed. He might use it fine with the front on in a playpen as not his main wheel.

I wonder if he's had an open wheel before and just prefers it.

I ordered two trixie wooden wheels and were awful quality. The wood banding stuck up, it wobbled like a drunkard and scraped the base.It isn't height adjustable either.

A cork wooden getzoo wheel came today and the difference in quality is stand out

Agree the getzoo wheels are way better (and the rodipet) was it more expensive? I did have one Trixie wood wheel that needed to be returned (scraped on the base and must have been knocked or something) but otherwise not had any issues. The Karlie Flamingo one is better quality - but costs more (about £25). They look identical. I find the Trixie one works better screwed upside down in the cage (it can never scrape on the bottom then which can happen as it gets older and bearings go a bit.

This is the syrian sized getzoo one. Works out about £32 in Uk money but there's postage on top.

The wood was sharp and coming away with both trixie which made me just go for the getzoo.

I added a few hides and sprays and my sister added some bits that split postage.

I got the 30cm for my dwarf, id say next one up for syrian unless on the smaller size

Thank you so much everyone is so helpful on this site and it’s great to hear your thoughts on the wheels, it’s like reading real time reviews

I’ve made the decision to swap it out as I can keep the Trixie for his playpen, I’m thinking I’m going to go for a wooden one. Hammy originally had the open front smaller Savic from a baby til I swapped it for the Trixie so think he just got used to an open wheel where he can jump in and out.
