Default Hamster sitting

So, I just need some advice really. I’m low on money and could use the extra help and I was trying to figure out a way to make some extra money. Then on my Facebook page someone is looking for someone to look after their two hamsters for a month.

I love hamsters and we have the lounge so I guess I could just put them in there. I’ve already asked them what are there sexes and if they’re in two separate cages and have said I won’t be able to take them if they’re in the same cage as I wouldn’t want to be responsible if anything was to happen.

I just need some advice. How much should I ask for? Also the picture I’ve seen so far seems like a small cage and they’re saying they go on holidays often. There’s the part of me that wants to help, get some money to help here but also so these hamsters are well cared for while they’re gone. The other half of me thinks just tell them to put them up for adoption, it seems cruel to have hamsters and always be going on holidays.

Just need some advice of what to ask, what I should tell them as well. I’m just unsure.

That is a really difficult situation for you. If it were me, I would feel sad about the hamsters being in small enclosures and that would ruin the pet sitting for me.

I have been thinking about this and maybe it would be an idea to gently suggest they rehome the hamsters. If they go on holiday often and do not have somebody to care for the hamsters it may be best. I know that would be a difficult conversation to have though.

Yeah I’ve thought about all that myself! It would be dangerous for me to fall in love with them XD Also as you say, all I can tell for now is they have wood shavings as there bedding and a potentially small cage. I wonder if maybe their wheel is small also and then I’ll end up spending the money I earn trying to make things better.

I wouldn’t want to encourage bad hamster care so there’s the part of me that thinks if I did it maybe I could sneakily suggest things. But at the same time if they go on holiday a lot and it’s their kids hamsters then it would be difficult for them to ever have a fulfilled life.

They’ve gone quiet on me now since I’ve asked about the cage situation so I’ll wait and see if they say anymore. Half tempted just to buy a cage if they don’t have two just because I don’t want them to go to someone irresponsible.

I actually just edited the last bit of you keeping them as I thought it looked like I was being flippant. I am glad you were not offended. You are so caring to think of buying another cage especially as when you were thinking of this to earn some money.

Thank you no I didn’t think it was flippant at all! Think they’re ignoring me now anyway and I’m hoping it’s not because I said about the cage. It’s true what I said though, I’m not an insured sitter so if they bring them to me in one cage and one ends up harming the other. I’d be blamed. I don’t know what to do!

It is frustrating when that happens. Maybe they have found another pet sitter or maybe they are busy with the children. It will be home time, bath time etc. I know it will be an anxious wait for you wondering if they will reply or not.

I was thinking that - and that it's maybe not a good way to think of earning more money. I know others who've looked after a hamster and been so upset about the small cage and the owners not wanting to buy another one, that they actually bought the hamster a new cage and gave it to the owners. Sounds like a surefire way of losing money!

If wanting to earn some money though, how about dog walking? I think that's a very much needed thing these days for working people who don't have time to walk their dogs. I don't suppose that earns much either though.

They haven’t responded yet so I’m pretty sure they’re ignoring me since I’ve asked if the hamsters live in separate cages. To be honest I think you’re both right about maybe costing more than I make. I have thought about dog walking also but to earn a decent amount I’d need to walk several at a time and I’m not very strong to be able to hold them all back.

Obviously with hamsters just feeding, water and handling are all easy to keep up with so was thinking it might’ve been a good idea. I might look more into it though and even consider just seeing if anyone needs someone to check on their pets on a daily basis or something.

I've toyed with this idea as a retirement plan but know that i couldn't do it. It wouldn't be my place to point out to people that their hamster care isn't good enough because they would pay me to provide a service as a petsitter. It would only upset me to look after hamsters living in substandard habitats.

I work in the care sector and many students are on the books with care agencies to work shifts when they can fit them in.
