The camera records (to the cloud) a 12 second clip when it detects movement in the area of the image you have selected. It sends an alert to your phone in seconds of that activity. I can then play back that 12 second clip on the phone from anywhere.

Now, if I pay $16/year, I will get unlimited clip recording for each event... but, I don't need that. I can easily switch to the live stream and see what he's up to.

I can also start recording the live stream to the memory card in the camera. That will run until the card is full up..... many hours, I assume. Yes, I can skip though the video, if need be, using my finger.

All this for around $20 to buy this camera... some five years ago.

There was a very detailed researched thread on lights and colours on here some years ago, and I believe the conclusion was they do need darkness. They may not be able to see the colour red but it is still "light". It affects their biorhythms if they don't get their period of darkness at night. So if using fairy lights or a red light would suggest it's only for a limited period but off most of the night.

My camera also has a little red light on when it's recording but it's a tiny little thing that doesn't light up the room and the infrared cameras pick up a really good picture in complete dark.

His behaviour sounds normal for a new hamster. He'll soon get bolder

It was years ago, I'll see if I can find the thread - one of our male members found research that said actually blue light affected them less than red (I think). But all light is light.

Only found this - saying any dim light affects them (regardless of colour)

Light at Night Causes Changes in Brain Linked to Depression

Most studies say red light is the least harmful (but I still go with complete darkness is best for them - and not harmful)

Ok, will set the timer to go on at 8 and off at 10 each evening.

Should give me a chance to feed and bond with him and still not affect his biorhythms.

So, last evening was the first time using the red night light. Set it to go on at 7pm and off at 9pm.

Since I have the camera and it sends an alert to my cell phone, I knew exactly when he was active for the first time. Right on cue, he was up and about a bit after 7pm, as he was on all the other nights with no red night light.

Seems it had no affect on his waking up or at least he did not retreat from the light when he came out.

I'll keep the light on the timer for the two hours as it gives me a chance to go in there and give him some fresh veggies without flipping on the room lights. I am sometimes able to stroke his back for a bit but he usually runs off and hides after a minute or less.

That sounds positive . Yes it's confusing when there are so many conflicting things on the internet. And there are many that say red light is better than any other coloured light. It would be nice to see some comparisons between red light and complete darkness over night. I think it's difficult to know for us what goes on inside them over and above just behaviour. I'm glad your hammy didn't seem affected by the red light at that time in the evening.

Added the 10' of 3" ID PVC flexible tubing to the enclosure today.

Entrances are on each side of his pipe to the condo and burrow area.

Will be interesting to see if he actually uses it.

Only time will tell.

That looks interesting Clever idea. I think he will use it. He "might" decide to nest in it however. If he does that you could maybe make shorter versions - I know they like tubes and tunnels that lead from somewhere to somewhere (eg from the top of a house to a shelf). Or maybe he'll just enjoy running through it.
