Default Real men don't keep hamsters

I get the impression there are not a lot of men who own hamsters.

All the videos I've seen are with young ladies.

Is this the case and why is that?

We've had quite a few male hamster owners on here, of various ages. Maybe ladies are more prone to making videos these days. There was one male member who made a video about how to make a hamster wheel and one who made a video about how to use a hamster running in a wheel as a source of power. Plus quite a few teenagers.

I think things have been quieter since the pandemic - people have a lot of other things to worry about. And maybe ladies are more inclined to make videos?

There are males out there. I know of 4 male youtubers that have hamster videos, 1 that helps rescues hamsters and has a few videos on that, 1 that has created a lot of things for his hamsters (i think that might be the same guy serendipity might be on about that made a wheel) 2 others but they don't seem to make videos anymore, 1 went around dressed up as a hamster destroying all small cages and another who's hamster died as he was making a big cage for him, So, they are out there.
I know from my Instagram account my followers are about 71% female and 29% male and on Youtube it is about 50/50, it's not to say they all have hamsters but some must

Well in my opinion only real men keep hamsters

Lol joking aside, I saw just recently a man on tiktok that has a super cute syrian and he is starting to climb abit with his vids. his handle is : @chrisdavies50

So while they might not be very visable in the social medias I believe a lot of men keep not just hamsters but other small furries

I think, generally speaking, because women have more maternal instincts & are drawn to babies and animals more often, they tend to keep hamsters more.

It's similar to how, especially in media, women keep chihuahuas were as men keep "manlier" dogs such as Pit Bulls or Rottweilers.

I don't think it's wrong at all if a man was to own and love a hamster, I'd find it quite endearing personally but, at least in my life, I've only met women who own hamsters past childhood.

Many members on here are couples as well - with the Hamster Dad equally involved! Our first Syrian used to sit on the sofa between us.

I don’t like to make presumptions about people when I’m not entirely clear on the topic but I study psychology and one thing we’ve been looking into recently is gender differences. Obviously I know nowadays there’s men, women and everything inbetween but normally there are biological differences between sexes. Those who are transgender often have brain structures similar to that of the gender they feel they identify as so we can be pretty certain there are differences.

What’s normally assumed is women normally end up being ‘people’ oriented and more emotional, and men tend to like ‘things’. When looking at studying psychology around 80% of the students are female, whereas on 12% of engineers are female. It’s why STEM came out to encourage more females into the field.

Obviously when hormones are considered again women are more sympathetic towards things and tend to be more caring towards animals. But I don’t like saying that men don’t have hamsters as such. I have a hamster and my partner always says he can’t hold her for too long because he loves her so much he has to grit his teeth. He loves all our pets but I think men do tend to like animals they can be a little rougher with normally like dogs.

He has a cat and constantly refers to her as a panther. She’s actually scared of everything lol but she is our mini panther. But I don’t know if I wasn’t with him if he would have a hamster of his own.

And like Serendipity said it could also be a camera thing, and relating back to the ‘people’ and ‘things’ a guy might be more likely to post his car than his pets. Also, just how society is women are allowed to melt over animals, and I know things are much more equal now, but I think a lot of men still feel they’d be seen as weak to see an animal as cute. Men tend hide their personal lives whereas women are more open to be emotional.

Like I said at the start I don’t like to make presumptions on topics I don’t know 100% but there may be a difference. Also, some men are more feminine and some women are more masculine so if there is a difference it may just be coincidental or be due to differences in lifestyle or something instead.

Hamsters are great pets! They can really communicate with you and be a little buddy. They tend to be seen as childrens pets, but as this forum will show there are many adult hamster owners - from teenagers right through to erm - much older.

Even as an adult female I had funny looks and comments when I talked about our hamster - with people saying - those are childrens pets aren't they? So there are a lot of misconceptions about hamster owners generally!
