Help me get rescued syrians in better cages! Need advice!
Hi! I need everyone's help please!
My partner's parents gave us their daughters syrian hamsters to bring to the animal shelter, not sure age but she got them recently as babies and they are still youngish. I believe they are both males, and they are in the SAME tiny critter cage. (They ran around my bathroom and I have watched them, no fights or scuffles, but I know they need into sep cages asap)
We can't keep them, but I want to get them in better cages before surrounding them to the shelter (who can't take them til this Sun)
Can anyone please provide links to best cages for syrian hamsters on amazon prime? Along with what wheel is recommended, I know they need larger ones for the back? Trying to keep everything around 200-300 max, but most likely they will be staying in this cage at the shelter, and perhaps with new owner, so trying to make it somewhat decent.
Would like food suggestions as well, right now they are just on a cheapo walmart mi which I know is not good.
I gave them some apple and spinach, and broken dog biscuit which they like.
Currently they are on pine shavings, are those okay? I usually use carefresh, but don't want to invest too much since we cant keep them.
Needs to be stuff that ships from amazon.
I know syrians need a ton of space though, but anything will be better than their current cage.
Thank you ina advance!!
Have to go to appt now, but will write more later and share photos.

Re: Help me get rescued syrians in better cages! Need advice!
More experienced people will respond, but to give a rough answer here’s what I know I can tell you.
Syrians need a minimum of 80cm x 50cm continuous floor space and should be no higher than 50cm I believe, to avoid injury from falls. I think they say for Syrians you can have a 20cm wheel but I’d honestly just get 28cm or bigger.
Chew toys are essential and a big home to sleep in, a shoebox with a hole cut out of it would be fine. You need 6 inches of bedding for burrowing. I can try and find some links but I won’t know many.
Also pine wood shavings is not safe because it can cause respiratory issues and also contains natural insecticides which could indirectly impact your hamsters. You can use shavings like aspen or as you say carefresh. I use Katee clean and cosy and Fitch is also a good paper based bedding.
I will add it’s really kind what you’re doing but it may cost a lot if you’re only having them for a week. 100% agree you need to keep them separate but even for now using a large container box with ventilation would be better than what they have now. Or instead of buying new I got mine on Facebook marketplace or have a look on gumtree if you’re in the UK.

Re: Help me get rescued syrians in better cages! Need advice!
Thanks for the advice. I should have specified I'm in the us. There might be a possibility of keeping them if my partner agrees and apt complex approves. For now, they are in a large 16 gallon Rubbermaid bin I had that is at least double the size of the 15"X10" critter trail they were in. Once I get a second water bottle tomorrow I'll separate them. They ran around for at least an HR in my bathroom and I oberseved them in their new cage, no signs of fighting or aggression yet. They slept snuggled together oddly enough despite having several soda boxes filled with shredded toilet paper buried in shavings.

I have the lid covering half of it but otherwise it's deep enough they can't escape and it's in my bathtub as well poor babies have been without water for who knows how long as their water bottle was bone dry when we brought them home and their cage hadn't been cleaned for months I'm guessing. No idea when they last got to roam either, but they had fun zipping about my bathroom and are super friendly and easy to handle. They bit our young niece apparently, which is partially why they no longer wanted them, but I'm guessing she just woke then up or startled them.

If I can keep them, I'll get them spacious cages, better bedding for their respiratory systems, toys, hideys, etc. But for now, they at least have clean bedding, fresh water, more space, deeper bedding, and tons of cardboard boxes to hide and play in

Yeah I’m not 100% sure of US cages that are sold but at least I might’ve given you some ideas of what you need to look out for. Also, I noticed you said you can separate them once you’ve got a second water bottle, just so you know they can drink out of bowls as well if you’re worried about leaving them together. And that way you could use a bowl just until the bottle comes.
It is strange how snuggly they get with each other! I know it’s a different breed but when I was young, I had two robos males and they got on well for the first week. But then they really started fighting bad, I believe some robos can live with each other but never heard of Syrians getting along. Very strange!

Re: Help me get rescued syrians in better cages! Need advice!
I apologize if I sounded short in any of the above posts, I'm posting on my cell and suck at cell phone typing. I usually respond a lot more detailed abd grateful sounding.
Quick update! My apt complex approved the hamsters, and my partner said yes that we could keep them if I wanted. I decided yes, I do want them.
I got them each this cage https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01E0RWM...hk_typ_imgToDp which is 39.5"x23" so over 900" of floor space! 😃 I am going to put mesh over the cage. They got into a scuffle (no blood drawn but fur was mussed) so into separate bins they went. They each have a water bottle, I tried the water bowl but they just buried it. 😂
Found out they are about 4-5 mo old so still babirs

That's wonderful news! So glad you are keeping them and looking forward to photos.
Do they have 28cm wheels? I've rescued a few Syrians myself and at the begiining it's always like: it will be nice to get to know you....once you come off your wheel!
