or see if they wheel in a certain direction most of the time... then see if moving it to another wall of the cage makes them wheel in the other direction - they may be wheeling towards a light source (window etc) or away from it, who knows it will be unique to your hamster, although there may be some science behind it - hamsters are very widely used in research so something similiar may have been studied already, light certainly has an effect on their physiology. I don't know if maybe they run away from the light trying to get away from the impending dawn in the wild?????
