Default Getting empty tank syndrome lol.

Hello.

I know it seems a short while since my little Bonnie died, but I now feel 'ready' to give a new little dwarf a new home after I come back from holiday (20th-28th November). I know that Rodipet is quite highly recommended on here, so I splashed out a bit and got some really good things.

Rodipet® EasyClean basic GOBi Ceramic House Ø 13 cm

I love this little house and actually is a lot bigger than I expected it to be. It's a lot better than what I had previously for Bonnie and is easily washable so when my new little one does go over to the rainbow bridge, I can just stick it in the dishwasher and reuse it for another little one.

Rodipet® EasyClean Drink Set

This looks great online and even though it does come with a tiny water bottle, I can fit any of the classic water bottles in it and I like the fact that I can have a little treat 'station' for things like millet sprays etc. Like the house it is really good quality and also easily washable so that's good as well. I also have a water bowl, just in case of emergencies or if my new little one starts struggling with his/her water bottle when he/she gets older.

Rodipet® Organic Dwarf Hamster Food ''JUNiOR'' - 500g

When I had Bonnie, she was on Harry hamster (with the bigger pieces broken up), but then I thought I'd try out this one as I've never bought hamster food online before (not even in the UK). I like the sound of what is in this and hopefully my new little one will too.

I've also got a new wooden wheel from Rodipet too as well as a couple of cardboard Chubes and a flexible wooden bridge from Pets at Home (was buying dog treats for work - no they weren't for my lunch! ).

I have to say I was really impressed with the quality and pricing of Rodipet and am very glad that this company is very highly recommended on HC.

Now just got to wait until I come back from my holiday at the end of the month! Tick-tock-tick-tock lol.

I wonder what you are more excited about, your holiday or new dwarfie.
Haven't seen this drinks set before. Looking forward to meet your future hamster and set up.
I think the food is one of the best ones available for dwarf hamsters and comes with a handy little scoop.
Enjoy your holiday.

Hi Ria.

I think it's a mixture of both 50/50% at the moment lol. In desperate need of a holiday as like most people, haven't been on one since 2019, but I am really also looking forward to getting a new little dwarf as well.

I must admit I haven't opened the food yet to have a look (as I want to keep it as fresh as I can), but nice to know that there is a scoop in it as I was just about to have a look online for one. I really like the drink set and it looks like a fun way of seeing my new little one pulling out millet spray from it lol.

I think it was Serendipity who first recommended Rodipet to me and even though I was a bit unsure about ordering stuff from abroad, seeing what they had on their website and just how nice the stuff is, I can see me ordering more from there in the future.

Part of me feels like I am replacing Bonnie too quickly, but it feels strange not hearing little paws scurrying around the tank. I miss Bonnie loads, like I do all my Rainbow bridge pets, but I know I will be giving a new little one just as much love as I did with her.

I totally understand where you are coming from.

It's just not right to have an empty cage sitting there knowing that there are so many hamsters out there waiting for their lucky day to arrive to live in it.

It's not replacing a departed hamster but about giving another the chance of a happy life.

Does sound exciting! I think Cypher had that ceramic house . It is quite heavy so it either needs to be on the bottom of the tank (with some substrate inside). Or supported underneath. Otherwise they will burrow under it and can get squashed! If it sinks. But I’m sure you know that already.

Yes I have used that food. I actually used to mix it 50/50 with the Bunny Dream dwarf hamster food (which has mealworms in). Both are a little bit low on protein so you’ll need to supplement the protein a bit. I just used to give a quarter of a shelled walnut once a week and a tiny bit of cheese once a week. And sometimes used freeze dried chicken cubes for cats (but they don’t keep very long and smell awful when they start to go off!). That’s just fir the first year. After the first year the protein in the food is about right.

The top of the house makes a good food bowl too . Although needs a ramp up to it maybe - unless the house is sunken in the substrate (ie on the bottom of the tank).

Looking forward to seeing your set up and new dwarf hamster! You’re not replacing Bonnie - your new hammy will have their own personality- it’ll feel different x

Hi Serendipity.

Yes I had already planned to put the house on the bottom of the tank as I could feel the weight of it when I opened it. I have put it next to the shelf so my new little one can climb up onto the shelf and then go onto the roof from there. I am going to use the roof as a 'treat station' so my new hamster will become aware that his/her treat is up there.

Regarding the mix, I was thinking is there anything else I needed to add to the mix. I'll have a look around for some Bunny Dream Dwarf Hamster mix when I get paid on the 21st (although will probably be the 19th as the 21st is a Sunday lol). Mealworms are easy for me to get and he/she will have a choice if it's a live one (with the head crushed) or a dried one. I'm guessing it's OK to give a live mealworm to a hamster - with the head crushed? I have done it before with a previous syrian I had.

The Rodipet dwarf junior should be fine on its own without adding any other mix. If you wanted to boost protein I would go with freeze dried chicken, freeze dried shrimp, or the live mealworms with crushed heads you mentioned. Those actually would be much better than dry ones, especially because you can make sure they're freshly gut loaded and filled with great nutrients!

Hi AmityvilleHams.

Many thanks for the advice above. I'll go with the live mealworms then as that's one of the things I feed my Leopard Gecko (along with locusts, but I won't give those to new little one).

Hello.

Due to my paid work drying up a little over last month and this month, I am having to postpone getting my new little friend until after the New Year, plus I am not one for buying an animal at Christmas anyway.

Most of the things I need are all ready to go for my new little one, but I still need to sand/plastikote my shelf and the wheel, but other than that everything else is ready to go.

I am hoping things will pick back up at work again in January, but I will keep you all posted regularly.

Until then, I am enjoying looking at all the hamsters on HC.

Sorry to hear that. That is tough. I hope something better turns up soon. New Year is a good time to get a hamster too, with people getting them for Christmas - many people then decide it's not for them and advertise them for adoption.
