Unhappy Ghost Hamster Advice

Hi! This is going to be long but please read.
Quick backstory I had hamsters for years and then didn’t have any for few years. I now have a Robo (Since Jan) and a Syrian (Since May) My Syrian Clyde is a ‘ghost hamster’ which I didn’t know was a thing until I saw Victoria Raechel’s video.
The thing is I don’t mind not seeing him all the time as long as I know he is content and happy. He’s in the Rodipet LaOla 120cm50xm with tons of enrichment. He’s never shown any signs of stress and seems happy in there. (Just wanted to note that he isn’t in a small cage with nothing) When I do have him out for free roam or just a quick cuddle he is super content, eats out my hands and just chills. I can go days without seeing him and weeks without getting him out his cage. He is never up in the day and only comes out long after I’ve turned off all the lights and gone to bed and then when I wake up he’s already gone back to bed.
I give him fresh water every day and food when he needs a refill. I leave him plenty of treats/fruit/veg. I’m always buying him new toys and enrichment to keep him busy and happy even though I don’t get to see him enjoy them.
I know I take good care of him and when I do get to see him he is content and like I said at the start of my post if he’s happy doing his own thing then I don’t mind not seeing him or playing with him as often.
However I feel extremely guilty like I’m neglecting him in some way. It’s really upsetting and makes me feel like a bad person. I love him so much and I’m just trying to do what’s best for him. I would just like to hear from other people who have/have had hams like this. Thank you if you got this far.

Default Re: Ghost Hamster Advice

Hello and welcome to HC!

Sounds like normal hamster behaviour to me and nothing spooky about that.

I've had and currently have hamsters like that. They stay underground or in their nest all day and wait till its quiet, the lights go off and the humans go to bed and then they come to life, forage, run on their wheels and go about their hamster business like hamsters would do in the wilds.

Those hamsters are friendly when they happen to come across their humans and enjoy out of cage time but everything has to happen on their terms.

I have a dwarf who is oblivious to anything and anybody outside his Hamster Heaven World and has been like that since he came to us at 2 months old. He's 19 months now. I used to worry that i'm neglecting him but i'm not. On the contrary, i'm letting him live his life the way he wants to.

I think your hamster is lucky to have a human companion who appreciates and loves him for the lovely and independent hamster that he is.

Hamsters are individuals with personalities. Some want us humans to let them out of their habitats every day, they seek us out, enjoy being stroked and fussed over and others prefer their own company but like us to be there.
