Can someone identify this sore on our hamster?
My kids pet hamster "Chippy" has developed a sore on his hindquarters over the past couple weeks. It's fairly large, maybe half the diameter of a dime. He's almost 2 years old and still fairly active. I haven't noticed him running in his wheel that often though and he's been drinking a LOT of water for the past couple months. I made an appointment at the vet but the earliest they could get him in is a week away.
Thank you for your help/advice!

That looks nasty. Would you be able to send the pic to the vets for advice as if he needs antibiotics that is too long to wait. It does look like a burst abscess but you can't be sure without seeing it and a vet would need to diagnose. I hope he can be seen sooner. Maybe call around other vets?

It does look nasty. You definitely need to see a vet for diagnosis and treatment. I can't quite tell where it is but it's very round. Maybe ringworm (fungal infection) or a burst abscess as souffle says. At 2 years old also he is very elderly and it may be something like a tumour. But only a vet can diagnose. He will almost certainly need to be on same pain relief (Metacam/Meloxicam is usually prescribed). And something for the sore possibly, depending on what it is.
