Default Robo coming next week :-)

I'm adopting a four month old robo from a hamster rescue - he's coming in about a week's time. Meanwhile getting organised Quite exciting - it'll be nice to have a robo again and have two hamsters again. They have minimum cage size requirements and bedding depth of 6" and said the Plaza would be good for him as he's already in a 1cm bar cage and not a climber. So I've started setting it up with 4" cardboard round the inside to reduce the height. Ie deeper bedding to reduce the height. The Plaza has 9.5mm bar spacing so should be ok. I'd prefer 7mm but he's not exactly a tiny baby. It's Moo's old plaza cage and has a nice shelf that was made to fit it.

Exciting news! Can't wait to see photos of your Robo and his set up. Why do you have to wait till next week?

Because that's the earliest they can deliver him. Meanwhile sending me photo updates. Anyway it gives me time to get everything needed ready. Kind of feels like a wait though!

It is a wait but will give you time to change your mind a few times regarding the set up. Maybe you get it right the first time but i don't. I set it all up, then look at it and think "nah, don't like it" and change it. Usually i don't like the second attempt either and go back to the original one......then, along comes the hamster and rearranges it all!

My current foster Robo Walter, got very settled in Gordon's old tank, keeping a very low profile.

Yes takes me ages to get it right! At the moment I have a ladder problem (I often have ladder problems). Ramps to shelves that actually are secure. I have two good ladders and neither of them fasten on securely - so may have to do a bit of diy. It's why I often use a cork log instead of a ladder. Anyway - plenty of time to fiddle about. And yes am a bit concerned I may not see him much for the first two weeks - if at all - with the deeper substrate! Only done it deeper to reduce the cage height.

I use the 55cm Trixie bendy bridges from Zooplus as access ladders to shelves. The quality has been very hit and miss lately. Some are good quality and safe but i had one where the sticks were so uneven causing unsafe gaps that i couldn't use it.

Ever since i had the pantry moths, i started to use more washable plastics. A single plastic tube cable tied to the bars is ideal to safely get up shelves. Easy to clean with a bottle brush if needed to.

Ah thank you for reminding me - I forgot about tubes as shelf access. I gave up on the barkwood bendy stick bridges - partly because of moths and partly because I couldn't make them stable (kept sinking or falling off). But I sometimes use the coloured bendy bridges which are smooth wood and screw to the bars. That isn't long enough without being too steep for a robo. I have two wood ladders. One has a hook missing which is a pain so rather than try and find another hook I'm using the other one - which is a very nice smooth wood ramp from getzoo - but it has a weird slot at the top - clearly designed to fit particular shelf. That's the one that kept falling down with Nugget, when I just had it wedged on the shelf. So I've stuck a piece of wood dowel to the shelf for the ladder slot to sit on to keep it stable.

So far I think I'll have too much to fit in the cage. Can't quite get used to the idea I don't need big stuff!

Absolutely everything is going in the freezer first! Or been washed.

I've seen ramps that bolt to the side of a cage. You can get them made in almost any length. Wooden Ladder / Ramp 150mm - 300mm Long x 94mm Wide - Cage Fixing Design - Pine | eBay

I've also taken the hooks off the long Trixie bridges and used them to hang the bridge against the side of the cage. You just make a small dent in the wood with an awl (or a small pair of scissors if you don't mind blunting them) and the wood is quite soft so the hook twists in easily. The bridge is reasonably secure like this.

Oh congratulations Serendipity
In the past I have used wicker tunnels hung with jute or grass tunnels or other shapes to go from shelf to shelf.

Thanks Sushi. I had a go trying to make a side hole on my coloured bendy bridge last night but gave up! Maybe it’s not pine wood. It does have holes but in the wrong side. So turning it over solves that but the metal clips at one end were bit as good as at the other end. So went back to the ladder . Luna I vaguely remember that - must check your videos again.

It’s just main access to a level from substrate level at the moment. I think my solid ladder will work now I’ve glued the dowel edge on the shelf .

Meanwhile I’ve been plastikoting and did something silly (clearly out of practice)). Didn’t leave an unpainted edge before putting down to dry - hope I can remove it from the plastic bag I sat it on!

I am regretting getting rid of my Barney cage now! The narrow bars would have been ideal for a Robo. Nobody ever imagined Barney and Alexander cages would disappear!
