But I was still a bit concerned about height and falls. Although rescue said he's not a bar climber - that could change! The effective height is still more the height of an Alaska than a Hamster Heaven.

Having had a failed attempt to screw some shelves at roof level over the rock thing (the plaza has a curved top edge and shelves won't go right to the top - the gap it left was a bit iffy). I eventually decided to attach a large hammock to the inside of the roof, stretched out high up - over the rock thing and the ladder - falling on those could be a hard landing from a fair height - if he happened to decide to start monkey barring - unlikely but don't want to take the risk.

That makes it very dark inside. It'll maybe make the hamster feel more secure but a bit harder to see things inside the cage! Which is already in a darkish corner. But fine really.

So got that done. Then thought - if he actually did climb the bars and get onto the hammock he could jump off the far end - only hard thing to land on is a piece of cork bark in front of the wheel - but still fairly hard from a height.

So I made an egg box hammock to overlap under the big hammock, over the cork piece. Which is not actually usable as he won't be able to get into it, but solves the possible fall risk issues. If he did happen to get into the hammock and try and jump out the far end.

Which makes it even harder to see much inside lol. But ok if you bend a bit. At some point I might adapt/lower the egg box hammock and sort some access to it but for now it's just overhead cover.

He may not even attempt to bar climb to the roof or try to monkey bar. But you just never know with hamsters!

So here's the end result.

Oh and slight allergy issue along the way. I had two hemp mats. Had them for a while - froze them for a week before use. Used up most of the first one covering the house roof and shelf and a piece over a bendy bridge.

When I started using the second one it gave me a bit of asthma and hayfever! Stronger smell. Really quite unpleasant. So decided not to use it. Wore off by next day. No idea why one smelled more/affected my breathing.

The sisal string affects me a bit as well. But not too much and wears off once you stop fiddling with it and cutting it.

Can't seem to cope with anything remotely grassy!

At least it gets you out of mowing the lawn.

I think that the set up will work and i love it but you won't know for sure until you get your Robo.

I had never met a climbing Robo until i met current foster Rupert. If you are worried about the hammock you could attach boredom breaker mats flash to the roof. That's what i did to discourage Rodney from monkey barring when he was younger.
I think that Robos are hardier than we think. They are equipped to jump and what goes up comes down again.

Looking forward to meet your Robo tomorrow and find out his name as well. Glad you're great with technology and have a camera to take photos to share on this forum, hint hint....

Dur am I being dense? What hint hint? Just used my phone for those actually - with a light shining on the cage!

Have a name - no-one else is interested in going through the usual naming selection process - it's a bit soon since we named the Puppy and that ended sadly. So I mostly did it myself and had OH approval so we can present a united front - we've decided on this name - do you like it. To Stepson. He'll probably say "whatever" (still sad about the Puppy - not interested in the Robo - but that might change). So robo is mine really but they usually become family pets as well (OH always gets interested and also has to do feeding sometimes).

You know I struggled to find chill and chew mats this time - they hyacinth ones seem to be out of stock everywhere. Can't cope with the grassy ones.

When cutting the grass I wear a mask Works brilliantly. Before the pandemic I'd have looked odd - but looks quite normal these days!

Will wait till the Robo gets here before revealing the name. I just want to be sure it suits him.

Hint hint as in reference to the fact that you know how to take nice photos and you know how to post them here so there would be no valid excuse NOT to post some asap. I know that i am for one very much looking forward to see your new Robo, lol.
Also very very curious about the name.

With the foster hamsters i often go with a name that sounds similar to the previous name. Rupert was Roo for example.

Has stepson not decided on a pet for himself yet?

Ah sorry! Yes I hope to get photos but I may have my hands full lol - or he may just disappear down a hole in terror. Glad I have my hamstercam.

So tomorrow will be an outdoor exchange with masks in the pouring rain, transferring a Robo from one pet carrier to another. Should be fine!

Couldn't they put him in a shoe box and then in a carrier or bin cage or something to hand him over to you in the box?

Surely, a rescue must have the odd Spelos or Habitrail pod lying around they could use and not want back.

I've done that a few times.
In fact, my adoption fee includes a transport box i make up from cheap Wilko boxes so the hamsters can have plenty of substrate with their scent on, all their chews and a toy.

I found a small tall samla box that had packets of hamster food in. So will use that rather than the pet carrier. Not sure what they will bring him in, but he can go straight into the small bin (a bit like a taming box) with some substrate and I'll bring him in in that and then into the cage. They are bringing a bag of his bedding as well. Must remember to put food in the cage

That will be safer to put their carrier inside the Samla and then take the Robo out. You know what Robos are like and how they can jump. Or maybe they'd let you take their carrier inside so you can let him out into his new enclosure.

I'd never transfer a Robo from one carrier to another outdoors.

Well it’s a nice sunny day - a bit of fresh air won’t do him any harm . We’re doing it outside as we’re shielding. Only person that’s been in the house in over a year is the chimney sweep!

I’m thinking Robo best scooped into a mug or lifted out in a tube and put into my box that way. Might let him have 10 minutes or so in the box first before going into the cage but I’ll see how it goes.

Moo was transferred outside in a car park! Bigger hamster of course.
