But I was still a bit concerned about height and falls. Although rescue said he's not a bar climber - that could change! The effective height is still more the height of an Alaska than a Hamster Heaven.
Having had a failed attempt to screw some shelves at roof level over the rock thing (the plaza has a curved top edge and shelves won't go right to the top - the gap it left was a bit iffy). I eventually decided to attach a large hammock to the inside of the roof, stretched out high up - over the rock thing and the ladder - falling on those could be a hard landing from a fair height - if he happened to decide to start monkey barring - unlikely but don't want to take the risk.
That makes it very dark inside. It'll maybe make the hamster feel more secure but a bit harder to see things inside the cage! Which is already in a darkish corner. But fine really.
So got that done. Then thought - if he actually did climb the bars and get onto the hammock he could jump off the far end - only hard thing to land on is a piece of cork bark in front of the wheel - but still fairly hard from a height.
So I made an egg box hammock to overlap under the big hammock, over the cork piece. Which is not actually usable as he won't be able to get into it, but solves the possible fall risk issues. If he did happen to get into the hammock and try and jump out the far end.
Which makes it even harder to see much inside lol. But ok if you bend a bit. At some point I might adapt/lower the egg box hammock and sort some access to it but for now it's just overhead cover.
He may not even attempt to bar climb to the roof or try to monkey bar. But you just never know with hamsters!
So here's the end result.
