Default Absolute Wheel Lover

Hi all, Pixie is coming along ace with taming. But of course, we just have 1 little issue. Pixie won’t come off her wheel, she comes off to gather food, chew on things, do whatever her hamster business is but it’s impossible to tame her whilst she’s running her little paws away on her wheel.

I had the idea of taking it out whilst trying to tame, but I don’t know if that makes me evil. She will sometimes get off to come in a mug and I let her crawl on my hand to get out the mug but most the time it’s impossible to even get her attention.

However, I’m so happy with how she’s improving with my hand. If anyone has any ideas of how I can sort this or just anything, much appreciated!

She's probably just a very energetic hammy and wants to get all her energy out!

Have you ever considered a playpen for her? You can sit in it whilst she can run around and climb on you or check you out and bond that way. Make sure you do include the wheel though, but since it'll be a new environment she may be focused and more intrigued in exploring other than running on her wheel. If she still doesn't stop though, you can take the wheel out for about 5 minutes every 15-20 minutes to see if she can explore everything else.

If you don't have a playpen you can use a hamster safe room (make sure she can't get hurt or escape through cracks or gaps (like in the wall or lifted up carpet with floorboard exposed or even under the door). Or, you could try the bath method and sit in the bath with them in it too. Just make sure if they climb up your front or back that they don't fall or make some sort of acrobatics flip and land outside of the bath or the edging of it and dart for 'freedom'.

Sometimes young hamsters can get a bit wheel obsessed. It can lead to them losing a bit of weight and getting worn out in some cases. However, durng the bonding statge, you want them to be comfortable in their new home but also interested in you. So if they are spending lots of time on the wheel, you may not be quiet as appealing!

You could put it in a few times a week, or as Imogen suggested, in a free range area just under they settle and you have bonded more

Thank you for the advice! I have ordered a playpen that's coming tomorrow, I have put her in a bin cage I used to own but I think I was just worried about her, since she was going really fast and seemed stressed.

However, she's been on my hand lots of times now and I think me and Pixie are ready to try again, I'm going to make sure to include her wheel as you suggested as a sort of 'distraction', I only had her in about 2 minutes the first time, but I will try make it a routine every night. She's definitely a very curious hamster though as she climbs into anything I put in her cage!

We've been practicing lifting up in a jug, and then walking over my hands to get out in her cage tonight. As her playpen comes tomorrow, I'm definitely going to give it a shot tomorrow! Hopefully this time, things will turn out!

Thank you all
