Default Taming is a nightmare!

Hello, Iíve talked about struggle with taming before but as a first time hamster owner I have so much to learn and mistakes to learn from. Iíve had my Pixie for over a month now (maybe 2 months) and Iím still at the beginning of the taming process.

She only lets me feed her from my hand in the morning when she is about to go to sleep, I find this quite strange? The furthest I got with her was in the morning, I was hand feeding her, lifting her in a jug etc. But, weíve just gone back to square 1. I know hamsters forget easily, thatís my mistake. After that day I did the same at night but she was just not having any of it, so I left her for a couple days and I think thatís where Iíve gone wrong.

Iíve tried feeding her from my finger tonight, she just kept running and running on her wheel and she wouldnít even acknowledge the treat. At one point she even let out a little squeak and I just feel Iím doing everything wrong, but Iíve tried giving time and itís just not working.

If anyone has anything to help/improve myself with taming, i would be so thankful and would end my worries, much appreciated!! <3

what kind of hamster is pixie? bcos some are easier then others, most syrians ive had normally have been tamed in 2 weeks but i recently got a robo and taming her is difficult!

i recommend for treats to use fresh vegetables as in my experience hamsters much prefer them to store bought treats (i find lettuce works the best!)

also a good opportunity to see if pixie minds if you stroke her is while shes leaning over her food bowl as she'll be fairly still

some recommend playpens for taming a hamster but personally i dont as new environments can be stressful for hamsters

as for why she only eats from your hand in the morning and when shes about to go to sleep may be because when your hamster wakes up they are more relaxed and still tired and same goes with when shes about to sleep!

i hope this is some form of help, i wish you luck taming her

Hello! Pixie is a Syrian hamster

I had a suggestion to not tame in the enclosure, as the whole cage territorial thing, but it seems to be the best option. I got her out with a jug, put her in a bin cage with little open space and her bedding she has been in but she absolutely FREAKED out, tried to escape and it made me so stressed!

She has definitely been getting better! I'm going right from the start and she's fab with taking food from my fingers now, I used lettuce as you recommended! I'm making sure to offer her some food from my hand 1-2 times a night, as that's where it went downhill last time!

Pixie is definitely not ready for me to pet her wherever as she can still get nervous, but in her food bowl eating, she's relaxed and fine with it, thank you!

Thank you for the help!

I think that people have different taming methods and its a matter of finding what works for you and your hamster.

I tame outside of a hamster 's cage but don't take them out of their cage to put them straight into another cage like a bin cage. I place them on my lap without touching them at first but slowly build up to that. To be able to do that one needs a big enough, hamster safe area like part of a hall, a playpen large enough to sit in it or a bath tub, all with a blanket down and a hide and toys to explore.

I let the hamster walk and sniff around on me for a few session starting off with very short sessions and gradually move on to stroking and later pick up exercises.
I give the hamsters a break inbetween sessions and start off with taming two or three times a week.

It works for me and i feel comfortable and confident with this method but a lot depends on the individual hamster and what people feel comfortable with.
