Question An update on Remy and other things

It's been almost 3 months now since I purchased Remy, which feels crazy as it doesn't feel that long at all... Again, I'm not entirely sure how old he is; I probably should've checked but I guess it's too late now. He was purchased on the 7th of April, 2021. I know someone told me their rough ages of when they're sold - so I'll have to dig back through and find it.

As with his colouring, it seems to have came out a bit more than I noticed a month ago. But still can't quite notice whether it's minx or dove with white, I guess some hamster coat colour expert would be able to tell me which one!

As with the taming; I guess there is an improvement and I'm not really noticing... but I'm not entirely sure to be honest. With my old hamster it was so easy to notice she wanted out time and to be held. But with Remy? I guess I saw an improvement two days ago, he finally came to my hand for a treat I was holding instead of me going to him. He doesn't entirely feel comfortable taking a step on my hand to grab a treat, but I guess he needs a little bit longer.

He also doesn't seem to fully enjoy out time, which is a little weird. I have his old spare bin box which sits at 709 square inches so plenty of big enough for a handful of toys, but he doesn't seem to enjoy it. He just wants to keep escaping to go back to his home - He doesn't even use his wheel if he's out of his home. Family does not want a pet in the bath, so that's a big no. I will not trust to let him free roam again in case I re-lost him and a cat did get him the second time around. The gap under my door is just not safe and is way too risky - our house is over 60 years old so it's a bit warped now. No door would fit snug, even if I tried replacing it. I could go for a playpen option, but one of those sturdy plastic ones from wish look good. I would make a cardboard one, but I don't trust him squeezing under it and escaping out under my door.

I get back into some sort of work soon hopefully, if I do I will be able to use the spare bin box as a home for a rescue dwarf.

Not really sure of any rescues here in my area though, the only places I can go to is Rayleigh, Basildon, Southend-on-sea, Billericay and Chelmsford. If anyone is aware of any ways to find a rescue that rescues hamsters, please let me know. Most of the ones I know of only rescue dogs.

An important notice before commenting on this picture:
- His wood shavings have been completely removed and changed to kaytee: clean and cozy
- His cheese (the yellow thing) hidey has been removed because 1. found to have wood shavings in after contacting P@H and 2. was too small
- His hidey house has been upgraded to an old shoebox with an on-suite toilet

Remy is a real handsome boy.
I'm glad you got the upgrades done for him, I'm sure he's enjoying his new home.

There is a lot in this post!

Regarding colour, pet shop hamsters don't always conform to the standard so he could be a "bad" mink or dove. Either way, it doesn't matter as you aren't trying to show him, he's lovely all the same

As for taming, don't compare your hamsters, like humans, they all have their own personalities. Some adore humans, others just see us an annoying presence that provides food lol Just go at his pace and go with the flow so to speak

What happened with the cat?!?

Just saw this as I was checking over my posted forums and saw this in bold! So sorry for the late reply...

I was free roaming Remy and made sure to block off all the gaps and stuff... but he managed to pull away the barrier I put up against my door crack and escape without me noticing. I was keeping an eye on him for the entire half an hour he was out but I take my eyes off for like 5 seconds to add the cleaner to the side walls of his enclosure and he disappeared. I waited about 2 minutes assuming he was under my bed but 2 minutes grew to 5 and 5 grew to 8 and I got a little more hectic. Under my bed was empty, but assuming he was blending in with my black, grey and white carpet I lifted up my double mattress and found he wasn't anywhere to be seen. Checked under my wardrobe, no hamster there and there was nothing else he could get under.

I go to check the door and noticed the corner was a little bit lose (and I remember completely tucking in a blanket and weights super snug but obviously not snug enough to not be outsmarted) and assumed he had squeezed through under the door. As stated, my house is like 60+ years old so things would be warped now - even if we replace the door the door will still have a gap under (as with all our doors as well)...

I found my cat laying in a funny position in my other families room, but the first time I was dumb enough to brush it off. I check the bathroom, the landing, the stairs and the downstairs in case he managed to stumble down the stairs... but nothing! I came back up and noticed my cat back on the floor and realised very quickly she was facing the wardrobe. I look under with the torch on my iPhone and found the little guy in the corner looking up - and so glad he was smart enough NOT to come out during the whole 10 minutes he was probably there.

The cat herself is vicious to humans - she's a rescue and we've had her for over 10 years but never warmed up. She goes for everyone but she seems to know that I have a lot more power over her so she keeps her distance, this enabled me to save the little guy and when I was able to tempt him out she would not come near me or even the hamster - even though she definitely saw it. I'm the only person she doesn't go after as she knows her place with me, she knows she'll get a slight raised voice for a scolding if she tries to claw up my legs. None of my other family don't tell her off so she darts for their legs even if they're 50 CM away when they are trying to walk past and avoid her so I guess that was another reason that enabled me to save the little guy as well from any serious injuries and possibly death by a cat. I'm lucky my other cat wasn't there, he's too loving with everyone and would completely get in your way to snatch a small creature.

In the process though of tempting him out, he did scurry up the back of the wardrobe as it was slightly pulled out but he ended up dropping like 5 ft to the ground. He darted to the corner of the room from out under the wardrobe but I just about managed to grab him and fetch him back to my room and quickly got his enclosure finished as he was in his carrier.

He hasn't been free-roamed since - I am not letting him out in my room again in case I do mess up. Hamsters are forbidden in the bath in my house, "it's not hygienic"... but I plan to move out in the next year since I'll be 21 next April so he'll be able to go in the bath then. I don't have the money for a play pen yet either so they're not able to be free roamed as of yet. But I always try to change up their enclosures a slight bit to make it a little more different. And don't even get me started on Oreo, him being a Russian dwarf... you know he'll sure be faster and quicker! I will definitely not be risking it with him - as well as his small size so a lot easier to squeeze through.

Sainsbury's sells this playpen for £6. I use it for Robos and foster dwarfs.

Why don't you put the cats outside when you let Remy run around?

One of my cats is an indoor cat since we get a lot of hedgehogs, badgers, foxes and other animals in our garden. He would go for anything - he's been seen going for one of the badgers once and they're like 10x his size.

My nan was never an animal person - she loved them but not as much as she does now. You see, I live in care with my nan (and my grandad but now deceased as of 2010) and my brother and when I was fetched into their life they could see I was animal crazy. Me being me as a kid and having very generous grandparents (they're too soft, even at 20 years of age I've never been grounded for anything and my bedtime has always been 12am the earliest) they transformed their entire garden into practically an animal wildlife centre. Since then the hedgehog population has raised in our area by some amount. It's not a lot, but it's something and we've only been like this for just over 14 years.

I care for our worlds animals so much, hence why I'm going into vet school to continue studying animals after my animal management degree and get into the veterinary industry. Some people I'd love to work with is Noel Fitzpatrick who does Supervet - sorry to scream but THAT MAN IS THE BEST EVER... haha, if I was old enough I'd so dream to marry him - did you know he's not even married nor has a girlfriend?? Too young though, bummer!

Thank you for the playpen, I've been sceptical of having a fabric playpen though. I have for years, I used to have that kind of material for my old hamster and she nibbled her way out within minutes if I remember correctly; unless it was even seconds!

I know what you mean about the fabric. I bought it because it was cheap to try it out and get a better one later but found that it works fine for Robos and shy foster dwarfs like Josie. I wouldn't put a Syrian or a confident dwarf in it though.

Your garden sounds fab. I'm still mad with myself for not saving a baby hedgehog years ago. There was a litter under the shed and one kept coming out during the day so i gave it a bit of boiled egg and cat food. One day i found it dead and later i found out that a hedgehog who comes out during the day is ill or weak and that i should have taken it to a wildlife rescue. I wished i had known.

They're such wonderful creatures to see, I've heard so many of my friends long to see a hedgehog in the wild but they have never been able to. Whenever they're here they don't seem to catch a glimpse of them in my garden!

All you can think about though is that you know yourself that you wasn't aware, and I hope you don't kick yourself! You meant well giving the little guy some boiled egg and cat food. It as a common misconception if you don't know a lot about them.

A lot of people I've spoken to about hedgehogs were themselves stunned when they found out about a hedgehog seen in the day is in need of help, although nocturnal I've heard so many wrong impressions that a lot of people assume they should come out during the day (in my neighbourhood anyway).

Remy sounds like Ralph our hamster! We have a fabric playpen like the sainsburys one but without the lip at the top and oh my goodness within 10 seconds hes climbing the walls - he tries to bite it but he cant bite through it at all its quite sturdy. My daughter usually watches him while im cleaning out the cage because its a long drop from the side onto the floor. Recently I've been putting books and dvd cases in there to make little obstacle courses with treats - err it keeps him occupied for like half a minute then hes up at the sides again! I do hope you find something for him that keeps him safe and that he cant climb the sides

As for handling, Ralph took at least 6 months to feel confident with us, but as Ria said they are their own hamster, I have had 3 hamster and they were all very different - thankfully not like hamster number 2 Foxy who would have your hand off if you dared to put it in the cage without thick gardening gloves on she died very young, she only came out for food - bit me so many times even through the gloves!
