Re: Mania
Mania has had an eventful night.
The whole time I was up she was at the bars as close as she could get to me.
She's been running on her wheel, eating, hoarding, foraging (some food is in the bowl but I scattered some. Also sprinkled some foraging mix). Digging in the sand bath. Plenty of tunnels. I don't know if she had enough substrate in her previous cage (not the p@h tank, only an inch of bedding in there). She went a bit mad when she realises she could dig and burrow. She's chewed a portion of cardboard so some of the bedding has spilled out onto the floor. Looks like she's had a great time.

Bonnie had a slight pattern on her back if i remember right. They look so unbelievably alike! And so unusual. I didn't expect to ever see another hamster similar to Bonnie and then along comes Mania. She's gorgeous.

Well I hope so. Had a lovely night of bar chewing though.

Re: Mania
2 nights ago I got Mania out for her first taming session. I know that at this point I'd only had her 2-3 days but I felt like she was ready.
Normally I leave them at least 3 days without doing anything then start interacting in the cage and building up.
First night I was talking to her. I has tissue in the cage which had my scent on it. However for the most part I was trying to ignore her but she was so curious. Every time I went into the room and she was awake she ran right at the door watching me.
The next evening she did the same thing. I got some treats to get her used to my hand. She wouldn't take the food from me but would nibble the food whilst in my hand. She allowed me to stroke her too.
The next night I got her out. I initially put her in the taming bin but she quickly got stressed so I just had her on my lap. Session was short, only about 10-15 minutes, but a positive one.
Last night I didn't manage to get her out but I did interact with her in the cage. She was happy to take a treat off me this time!
I'm so pleased with the progress she's making. Reminds me of Niko in this sense. Very quick to handle and wants to interact with her humans.

Re: Mania
Oh!! What a cute photo. The way she looks up at you like she wants to know what's going to happen next.
Won't take you long to tame her. You've always had the magic touch with animals.

She's very interested in the world around her. She wants to be a part of whatever it is you're doing. It's strange having a Syrian like this especially after Ghost who was strictly a look and don't touch hamster.
She doesn't like to be picked up by hand while in the cage but is more than happy to climb into her transport vessel (a plant pot of all things) to move to my lap where I can them lift her by hand.
Has anyone else let their hamster choose their own transport vessel? Niko was happy by hand, Athena was a gravy pot, Lilith would choose my sleeve and Ghost was always in a wooden tunnel.
I don't think it will take long either. I wouldn't go as far as saying magic touch Ria, I've had by fair share of bites and scratches from unhappy guests. Lol
I'm yet to meet another person who has been bitten by a frog

Re: Mania
Please do explain how you came to get bitten by a frog. I didn't even know they had teeth.
All the hamsters who want to come out simply climb onto the doors of their cages and then wait to get picked up. Two prefer to climb from door onto my hand.
I've never really put my hands in their cages much and let them come out on their own accord. So, yes i let my hamsters choose how they want to come out.

Frogs typically have a row of tiny teeth on the top jaw only (I later found this out as I too thought they didn't have teeth, just hard gums).
I was weeding down the side of the shed a few years back. It was an old shed, rotting really bad, had some impressive mushrooms in there, perfect frog world. (I rescued 20+ frogs that where in there when we took the shed down. The frogs went to the river near where I live. But that's another story.) Anyways I was weeding down the side of the shed, can't see where I put my hands as (it's a dead area, nothing we plant there grows so it's left to go a bit wild. Mice, hedgehogs, frogs all love it.) So I went to pull some stuff out to tidy it a bit and something grabbed my finger. It hurt. Looked where my hand was and there was a frog, chilling. Probably scared the poor thing to death. Fair to say I now check before sticking my hand into a bunch of vegetation
Aww that's nice. Glad I'm not the only one.
