Ria you are a star. I covered the section she bites with a towel (on the outside) and the bar biting was minimal! Hopefully tonight it'll be the same

A dedicated chewer can chew through wood and plastic, usually in the corners which you could re-enforce with metal brackets.

Maybe Mania will calm down yet as she's still fairly new.

You were tempting fate with that name, what's wrong with Maisie, lol.

Nevermind, she was chewing like mad again last night. Wouldn't be too bad if it was now and again but she's going on for an hour. Runs on her wheel, gets something to eat and then back to bar biting. Ugh

Does Mania want out? Is that why she's chewing?

You could buy a dolly trolley from B&Q and wheel her out of your room overnight. Something i have done with female Syrian foster hamsters in the past. I think it was Frieda who ended up in the hall a couple of times.

Spoke to the staff at P@H, in fact the one that dealt with the previous owner. They said that originally she was in a cage much too small and started bar biting. Previous owners upgraded the cage but because she'd been left so long it became a habit and one they couldn't stop, so they ended up putting her in an acrylic cage.

They (p@h staff member who dealt with them) said that it's something I should have been made aware of.

So now she's in the zoozone 2. I've blocked the little indents where the hay rack would sit so she can't get her teeth into it. We'll see how it goes.

Well almost 4 weeks since I adopted Mania. She's gone back to the savic plaza as she was determined to get to the indents where the hay rack would sit and started to chew it.

She's has nights where bar biting is worse than others BUT I'd rather her chew the bars and be safe than chew a hole through the plastic, escape and get injured (or worse) by rat/dog.

Also, Mania doesn't have a hoard. I'm not joking when I say she's gone through a bag of Harry hamster in 3 weeks! Anyone else have a hamster that's so hungry.

No, i can't say that i've ever heard of a hamster going through a bag of Harry Hamster in only 3 weeks. Guiness Book of Records springs to mind.

A hamster not hoarding i have heard of because Rodney doesn't. I think he's too house proud to have food lying around.

Does she it all the mix? That would be very unusual as well because most hamsters leave the bits they don't like.

I'll rearrange her cage tonight and go through the bedding thoroughly. But from what I can see from having a look around there's nothing left. But if she has eaten it all, she's consuming ~30g daily. She also has fresh food a few times a week and I add some flax too as well as forage. She is very activ though and doesn't look or feel fat

As long as she's healthy i wouldn't worry. You can always weigh her now and again to see if she's putting on too much weight. Still a record though. A bag seems to last weeks here between the two Syrians and a fair amount gets thrown out when Rory chucks it in his toilet.
