I've never really put my hands in their cages much and let them come out on their own accord. So, yes i let my hamsters choose how they want to come out.

Ha, I am the same with Twinkle, well I have to put my arms in, and then I wait till he is ready and he comes to climb up the enclosure where I am ... sometimes it is straight away, other times he does this little running circuit of wheel, run to me, then away again and we can do this any amount of times from once to god knows how many...
Glad Engel cleared up how she got bit by a frog!

Aw Twinkle . If I'm honest he sounds like the sort of hamster that'd do that. Lol

Re: Mania
Been working with Mania over the past couple of days. Getting her used to being picked up. It's going so well and she's so well behaved when out the cage too. I would go as far as saying that she's tame and I have only had her a week.
She does make some chirping noise when she is burrowing. Not all the time, just sometimes. She has also done it when exploring outside the cage too. But she doesn't seem scared or anything, in fact she's very confident when she is doing it.
Heres some more photos.

Re: Mania
What lovely photos, especially the second one is super cute.
Maybe she has been tamed in her previous home. I always thought that a tamed hamster stays tame, not that i've ever fully understood what exactly tame means. I suppose that there are different variations of tameness depending on the individual hamster's personality.

She's a little poser not going to lie. Yes it does appear that way. I've read a bit about hamster genetics and her colouring and the 2 different coloured eyes are not commonly found in pet shop hamsters so it could be that she originated from a breeder?
(I'm trying to figure out if she's cinnamon or cream as these cause different coloured eyes when a pattern is placed. Cream looks too light, cinnamon looks too dark. I'm still reading into it but when I have enough info I'll share it for those interested. May make a seperate thread just for genetics colours and patterns but we'll see.
Personally my definition of tame is able to handle for health check, no fear of owner and ability to move from A to B. Anything more is a bonus.
I agree that there are variations of tameness depending on individual hamster too.

Re: Mania
The longer I've had Mania, the more she's bar biting and monkey barring. She's doing it all night. She's in the plaza still (100x50) has 14-15" of bedding. Lots of enrichment. Free roams for 30 mins ish, she then wants to go back to the cage. I've tried adding less items for if she feels trapped. Added more in case it's not enough. Wedged cardboard between the bars where she's biting. She just moved over a bit and chews the bars or chews all the cardboard then the bars.
I've tried ignoring her, I've tried engaging with her. I've tried moving a few items about to see if she takes interest.
She's managed to take the paint off the bars but oddly she's aiming for places where the bars overlap?
I don't want to be putting anything on the bars (like a nasty tasting spray) to deter her.
I've got a zoozone 2 to put her in but I won't be able to get a nice depth of bedding and every Syrian I've had has tried chewing through the base.
Any ideas? It's constant chewing and pulling the bars with the teeth. Don't want her to get injured.

Re: Mania
Three of ours bar bite to get my attention. I hang a piece of cardboard on the outside of the cage so they can't see me. They pack it in then and go off to do something else.
This may work with Mania while the light is still on but the longterm solution for all night chewing could well mean an aquarium. I know of a female Syrian who was very demanding and bar chewed a lot, always wanting something and then chewed the bottle and the hole where the bottle feeds through when housed in the Zoozone 2.

Yeh that's what Im worried about if I put her in the ZZ2. I have thought about DIY cage. IKEA furniture type but will she manage to chew out of it.
