Default New hamster won't stop running

I recently got a Syrian and for the past couple nights she has not stopped running on her wheel. She hasn't even gone around her cage, she sleeps at her wheel too.

Where we got her from, she had a tiny wheel and it was tipped over I don't know how long for. She has a 12 inch wheel now, she has a 900 square inch tank with plenty of hides, chews, and stuff to do. I scatter feed her aswell

I'm not sure if I am meant to be worrying about this, but she won't come away from her wheel. If anyone has any advice or just anything to stop me worrying, that would be perfect. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to HC!

How wonderful that you rescued this hamster and gave her such a good home! She must be so happy.

I wouldn't worry just yet as long as she's eating and drinking. Hamsters usually calm down after a few days once they realize that all the fabulous new stuff is theirs to keep.

She must have so much built up energy inside her from not having a wheel that she'll have to get it out of her system first.

I fostered a rescue hamster once who didn't even know what a wheel was for. He was like one of those wind up toys, unstoppable but he calmed right down once he had learned to run on a wheel.

Do you know how old she is? With very young hamsters it can be a bit risky running all the time. Some breeders advise not giving them a wheel until they are about 9 weeks old. Otherwise it is probably a combination of excitement (at the nice wheel) and stress (at the changes).

I think it's fine, a lot of my hamsters did this after I got them. She is probably just excited. I wouldn't worry, she'll calm down eventually!
