She’s lovely. She has a bit of a baby look to her face to me but it’s hard to tell. Hamsters can also vary in size hugely. Some can be really quite big at 250g others between 125 anf 175g on average. They are usually fully grown when they get to 6 to 9 months old. You could do a weekly weigh and monitor her weight which will give an indication of if she is still growing. Easiest way is using electronic flat scales. I just put a bit of cucumber in the middle of the scale then zero them. Hamster walks onto scale to eat the cucumber and usually sits for long enough to eat or pouch it so you can read the weight.

Yes you normally gradually change food over but I’ve also had that where they prefer the new food and ignore the old. Whimzee mini dog chews are very popular with hamsters. I get the toothbrush ones as you can stick sunflower seeds in the bristles occasionally abd they enjoy getting them out. They also like the chews so will actually chew them (they often get excitedly taken back to the house to be out in a place of honour).

Walmart used to do Boxo bedding which is sold in bulk and is paper bedding so safe.

It can take up to two weeks for them to settle after a cage change until they scent mark everything and develop habits so bear to try and avoid cleaning out and changing things for a couple of weeks (spot cleaning the Pee area once a week is ok though). Adding the odd new item during that time is accepted as long as it doesn’t mean moving other items around. Or swapping out a wheel. Assume you’re in the US. You have a good choice of wheels there if you don’t mind buying online. There’s the 10” Carolina storm wheel which is height adjustable and could fit well in a bin cage if it’s not particularly tall. Best wheel is the 12” silent runner (that’s runner not spinner) sold by exotic nutrition - completely silent, very safe sturdy stand and less bulky depthwise than the Carolina wheel. It’s about 35cm tall on its stand though so may not fit in a bin cage.

Female long haired hamsters don't have much fluff. So, from the sounds of it, she probably is a long haired hamsters. It's the male long haired that have the really long hair/fluff all over.

Update: Rescue's cage is complete. I can now rest knowing she's in an appropriately sized cage with all the right utilizes. She loves her wheel already and sleeps in several locations instead of one.

She is OBSESSED with this dog treat at Petsmart. Orange and Chewch (RIP) love them, too. They're chews that are shaped like alligators. I saw Rachel Victoria post them on her YouTube channel saying they were hamster safe for filing teeth.

She didn't do well with the litter box. She built her house inside the litter box and was basically sleeping in her own urine/poop. Orange was litter box trained with hamster-safe sand and I'm trying that with Rescue. She just likes to dig in there, but ya know, that's what she's supposed to do.

She's also not nearly as evil as the previous owners said. Maybe it boiled down to cage aggression and lack of enrichment because all she was in was a small cage with a food bowl. I know I was supposed to wait... but I put her in a big coffee mug and moved her to the bathtub. She had NO problem climbing on me in the bathtub. She lets me pet her and I can pick her up but then she kind of panics. I know I'm supposed to wait but she's just so cute that I couldn't and she she did well with it. Again, she was climbing all over me.

That's a shame that you feel that way.

Yes, some of our hamsters wee on their wheels because they are excitable little creatures, especially the ones that never had anything to get excited about.

Yes, one poos on his wheel then runs on it and another pees and poos in his en suite toilet which i have to clean twice a week.

Keep in mind that a hamster's poo is not smelly and one type of poo is in fact ingestable.

Hamsters are very clean animals and cleaning a wheel is a part of keeping a hamster as a pet.

Rousey may run and poo on her wheel less in the future as she settles down and the initial novelty wears off a bit but in the meantime, please don't be put off by a little hamster poo and give her the love and attention she so deserves and never had before.

The first couple of days of having Maximus (russian dwarf hybrid) he did pee and poo while running and in the wheel, and I cleaned it up every morning, but after a while he stopped and replaced that habit with doing most of his business in the sandbath. Might just be a phase. If not, she might just keep doing her thing.

Aww she is gorgeous! It is lovely that she finally has the home she deserves. As for peeing and pooing in her wheel three of our recent hams have done that! It seems to be a ham thing. It seems to vary (I’m not sure why) how much they do in there at any given time. We have two hams at the mo and i just wipe their wheels as and when they need it. It doesn’t really bother me and they are still very clean. Please try not to get too worried about it and enjoy getting to know her x

Sadly, Rescue Rousey passed away this afternoon.

I have an older hammy named Orange, and she's aging so I check on her every morning to make sure she's still alive. When I was done checking on her, I noticed a decent amount of blood all over Rescue Rousey's bedding. I thought she was sleeping, but it turns out she was in some weird V shape and convulsing.

I picked her up and noticed something hanging out of her butt. I work at a vet, and mine was closed today, so one of the doctor's told me to come to their house. They said it was a prolapsed rectum and ALL of it had come out, about an inch to an inch and a half worth. It also looked like she had been chewing on it.

She was already pretty lifeless so we made the hard decision to humanely euthanize her. Even though we only had her a little less than 3 months, she was still a part of our family. My husband is distraught over it, more than I am now that I'm alittle immune to the process working at a vet.

She will be missed. I kept her water bottle as a reminder of her friendship.
