Default What Hamsters Want

Hamsters communicate with us.
When they want something from us.

Thought it might be fun to share their ways of getting a message through to us humans. It was our Robo Monty who gave me the idea for this thread so i'll kick it off with the mighty Monty himself.

Like any self respecting Robo, Monty runs marathons and like a true gent, pees while he runs.
His wheel was originally attached to the cage but i thought it far easier to remove for a wipe over when attached to its solid stand. So i did just that and put it back in its usual place.
Along comes Monty, one look, two sniffs. NOT HAPPY.
He scratched and scrambled on the base with his front paws then turned around and kicked at the base with his back paws. Really put his weight into it, all 35g of it.
I took the wheel out while he paced in its spot, dismantled it and attached it back to the cage.
Next time i looked, there was evidence of a tunneling Robo underneath the wheel and plenty of chucked out substrate on the carpet. He got what he wanted.

Like this . I’ll start with our first hamster Charlie who could give really black looks if you moved anything in his cage even a few millimetres. But his absolute way of communicating how annoyed he was about a change in the cage was to turn his back and stick his bum out of his house at you.

When Bramble wants to go home after free roaming, she climbs onto my hand and clings like velcro.

She escaped during the night once and came running to meet me as I got up in the morning so I could take her home. Apparently freedom wasn't all it's cracked up to be!

My past syrian ran up to me too, after a night of adventure! Another time he popped out of a hole under the dishwasher - a floor above his cage! I had no idea that hole even existed, until his nose appeared out of it.

I always put some of Nibbles' food in a certain spot, as well as scattered elsewhere. Once, when apparently I was late for feeding, Nibbles sat right where I'd normally put some food, and stared at me. Then I fed him as usual, and he ate every bit of food in the pile. I guess he was really hungry.

I had to buy a new sofa, partly because it was hard and uncomfortable, and partly because past Syrian Missy had been chewing it. She let me know her displeasure about the new sofa that didn't have holes she could hide in, by throwing herself off it (I was always there to catch her).

If I am even a few minutes late with Grogu's fresh food, he will be sat in the exact spot on the shelf where his bowl goes, waiting for me. He will also refuse to move from that spot until a suitable appeasement is given in the form of a treat.

My Syrian Peggy had some accidental free roaming time the other evening when I left her cage door open after giving her some food.

When I went up to bed a few hours later I turned my bedroom light on, noticed the cage door was open and a feeling of absolute dread came over me. But I turn around and there she is, sitting in the middle of the carpet looking at me like "can you put me back now please? That's QUITE enough adventure thank you."

She chewed a hole in a blanket, but so far that's the only damage I've found. The whole ordeal could have been much worse for both of us! I got away with one there, but the whole incident just makes me giggle now when I remember the expectant look on her face when I walked into the room.

I had a right good old giggle reading the posts. Hamsters really are funny little things.

Our dwarf Betsy who is very much my OH's hamster likes free roaming in the morning. When i try to scoop her up she'll nip gently to let me know that she doesn't want me to pick her up. When she does want to go back to her cage she climbs on top of my OH's foot and looks up at him. Soon as he offers his hand she climbs on it and goes into her "transport position" of lying flat with her head resting between his thumb and index finger. HE is her favourite human and the one she wants.

It's kind of funny how hamsters bond with one human in particular. Nibbles is slightly shy around me, but he's pretty scared if anyone else comes in the room, or speaks. Then I tell him it's fine, and that calms him down, so I guess he's reassured by my voice?

At dawn, when he decides it's time for breakfast, Bumble Bean bangs his food dishes together to wake me up.
