Question Burrowing !

Hi so I added more bedding to my robo dwarfs cage since it was encouraged to add more than 4 inches. I would say he has 4 inches right now but he instantly went underneath and I haven’t seen him. For some reason , my mind is worried that he could suffocate underneath. Is this something I should be worried about or am I just nervous ? Also one more thing I just moved from a water bottle to a water bowl and I’m scared he might fall in and this could kill him. Any tips ? Or should I find a way to use the water bottle instead ?

Hamsters are burrowers and won't suffocate in substrate, so don't worry.

All our hamsters have a bowl and a bottle. It is a good idea to have two water sources in case one fails. Some hamsters prefer a bottle over a bowl, in fact our Robo does but most use both. Only one of our seven favours the bowl over the bottle.

I put a glass marble or pebble, large enough not to be pouchable in the bottom of a water bowl to stop a very small hamster from falling into it.

You did great adding substrate, your hamster is probably having a blast. If you haven't already, thin layers of hay can help hold burrows as well. Robos come from very sandy regions, so having a very large sandbath is a great addition (if you haven't got one yet...)
