Default New Syrian taming - am I doing it ok?

Hi all, I know I am covering old ground, so I do apologise and will be grateful for any answers. We got our first ever Syrian hamster a whole week ago for my son's birthday. Oreo has settled well, is happy playing in our company although because he doesn't come out until 9pm our window of interaction is small.

So last night was the first night he took a homemade peanut butter & banana treat from my hand. For the previous two nights i'd had my palm out still & he knew it was there and jumped away.

What do I do now? I don't want to rush anything - shall I keep doing this until he might come into my hand and get used to my smell more? when do you try and get it out. I was intending on letting him go in an empty bath with my son so Oreo gets used to him and his smell.

But i'm really nervous about rushing anything and scaring Oreo or going backwards with anything.

Any support gratefully received! Lou

Hiya, congratulations on your new hamster! It's recommended that you let hamsters settle for 3 weeks before starting the taming process as they have a lot to get used to when they move to a new home. As you said, you don't want to rush anything. It's difficult because they're so cute and you can't wait to play with them but it will be worth it in the end. Try ruffling his bedding so your scent gets on his bedding. I've noticed its been around 3 weeks since you've had him now so hopefully you can start taming him now. I don't really know how it works when trying to tame a hamster with a child, someone else might. But I would recommend your son ruffling the bedding as well and doing what you're doing as well and then doing the bath tub. Let me know how you've got on!

Congrats on your new fuzzy friend.
let your hamster settle more. Id say 1 more week if Oreo seems to be on the more relaxed friendly side, if he seems more nippy id say 2 to 3 more weeks.
During those weeks, change his water when hes awake, clean his wheel when hes awake, and give him food in his bowl or scatter it around. This will let him know that theres other people around and that they arent going to harm him, it'll let him get used to the fact sometimes hands are going to be in his cage and around.

After that i would try to get him to take food from just ur fingers, have your son do this too at times and make him aware to be gentle, still, and kind with Oreo. When oreo is comfortable with this, you and your son can start putting treats in the palm of your hand and seeing if oreo comes up to you guys and takes the treats. Once again, when everyone is comfortable and used to this, you guys can try the bathtub. let oreo roam all over you and your son in the bathtub and try to pick him up by scooping him up from the bottom. good luck with your friend!
If you need any more guidance or visuals, you can try looking up taming methods on youtube, i recommend watching the channels ErinsAnimals and Victoria Rachel for those videos and general hamster care.
