Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
I only use filtered water from a Brita filter jug because the tap water in my area is pretty awful.
I can't see the photo of the bugs or maybe i've missed it?

Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
Saw the photo now. Never seen them before but my eyesight isn't that great. Fascinating tiny aliens. Someone somewhere will know what they are. They look almost like bugs that live on plants but why are they around water.....I'll have a look through my plant books when i get home. I know its a long shot but who knows.

It was on the 7th post Ria. It was a picture of my bowl with one very small white bug on it.

Highly unlikely your ham willl need treatment & may not even really notice them so don’t worry about that.
Johnson’s clean n safe should be fine just be sure to rinse well after using it.

I currently only have the Johnson's disinfectant but it does have a scent. Where did you buy your Safe4 unscented from?
Think I definately need to do a cage clean, I'm super paranoid about these strange little bugs!
Would you keep some used bedding and freeze it as previously suggested? I've got some new Clean and Cosy bedding being delivered tomorrow, yes or no to freezing that too?!

Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
Johnson's is fine, that's the one i use as well.
I've just googled tiny white bugs on plants and some interesting images came up. Have a google.
My organic gardening books were of no help. They basically suggest to get a bigger bug to eat the small one.

Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
I guess you could freeze the substrate from the cage if you want to reuse it, I don’t think freezing new is necessary using kaytee c & C.
I can’t remember where I got my safe4 of hand, I have the 5L concentrate & just google who’s cheapest when I need more (that’s not all for the hams btw!) but lots of places sell the small bottles unless it’s one of those things still out of stock so I would just give it a google.
I don’t see how bottled water would have any bearing on the bug problem, if you’re tap water is ok then I would use that anyway as some bottled water has a high mineral content, otherwise filtered water is better.

Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
Thanks so much for all your help guys!
Just a thought.. do you disinfect wood? Just worried if it seeps in and then is it not a risk to hamsters if they chew it?
I've managed to get hold of a spare cage to keep him in whilst I deep clean his. I just worry as we're not sure what they are I think I would feel happier to try and get rid of them. I thought about putting some of his bedding in with his scent on it but then I guess that would be stupid in case there are any white bugs in it! You would never see them against white bedding!
I fear this is really going to stress my poor little fella out especially if all the smells are new... I don't know what else I can do though!

I'd have a look if these bugs are anywhere else aside from Loki's cage. There may be a source somewhere.

Re: Help - small bugs in water bowl?!
Just wondering if they are mites afterall. Spider mites or white mites are attracted to water apparently.
Maybe a pest control company would be able to identify them?
