Where did you get your first hamster?
I got my first hamster when I was about 8 years old (the name was Emily) and at that time I had no clue about hamster care and that they needed lots of necessities. I bought (this was the time I was saving money for a small pet) a Syrian hamster at Petco, bought a small cage, and pellet food. The Petco worker said it was a year old (to be quite honest, I thought hamsters lived long like how dogs do, but I was wrong.) I didn't do any research at all.
Now I'm looking back at those times and regretting what I did. Thank goodness that I'm learning more about hamsters on hamster central. Everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable. Thank you so much everyone.
Sincerely,
Miiko

I had a similar experience to you, only I did a small amount of research, but still managed to avoid any good information. Lemon Drop, (My first hamster) was from PetSmart, same as my current hamster, Nibbles, because only after I got Nibbles did I realize everything I was doing wrong. I'm just glad that Nibbles can be happy for at least some of his life.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
very unfortunately my first hamster was a christmas present at age 11, I was given a crittertrail, oxbow pellet food, a hamster ball, and individual 1" bedding trays for a female syrian. after getting her, I was not allowed to upgrade her, buy her toys or treats, or spend any money on her unless I was out of food or bedding.
my mom had told me that her chewing on the bars all night long was just part of owning a hamster and that it showed that I wasn't responsible enough to have a hamster. even worse, I got another hamster after the first one died and he was so stressed that he passed away after a week. thankfully I decided not to get another hamster for a few years and when I did end up with another hamster, I did my research and bought everything for myself.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
My first hamster was many years ago, probably when I was about 9, ironically he was actually adopted from a girl who went onto be an RSPCA inspector. He escaped one too many times and her dad was fed up of being late for work trying to find him.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
Mine was when I was around 13. He lived in a Rotastak, which was considered fine at the time. He must have come from a petshop. All the hamster care I knew came from my mum, who had a hamster when she was little, when it was considered fine to have a hamster live in a cage the size of a shoebox. He had a tendency to jump out of my hands when I was holding him (when I was standing up) - it was just as well I was short!

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
I got my first hamster when I was about 14. He was a black male syrian I named Ebony. I bought him from Pets at Home in the UK (or whatever it was called back then - it was a fair while ago, around 2000 or 2001)
Looking back, apart from keeping him in a cage that was too small (but not tiny) and using inappropriate bedding because not many people knew better back then, I don't think my care was all that bad. He didn't mind being handled at all and used to run around on my bed as I did my homework. He lived to almost 3 and had a pretty good life. No regrets.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
My first Hamster was a Christmas present from my parents about 25 years ago. I remember that on Christmas Day itself, they gave me a book about hamsters and inside it was a letter that explained that when I had read the book, I could go and choose my hamster from our local independant pet shop (who are still in business today).
They had chosen the biggest cage that they could buy at the time even though I begged them for a Rotastak instead and the hamster I chose was a SH Golden that I named Zack. Zack was quite a sweet little lad and I loved spending my pocket money on toys and treats for him. Yes there were moments when they had to nag me to clean out his cage but they were very good at reminding me that I had agreed to be responsible for him throughout his life.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
My first hamster was a Robo from Pets at Home adoption centre. I was there to buy gerbil bedding and fell in love with two Robos in neighbouring tanks in the adoption centre, a pied one called Nero and a normal coloured one called Thunder. I liked Nero but he was adopted by a couple while I was there. So I went home to sort out a tank and went back the next day and adopted Thunder. She had been there for several months. Thunder turned out to be a completely inappropriate name for her because she was very quiet and placid for a Robo. I named her Pumpkin and she died in July this year.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
I had never wanted a hamster, but I rescued one anyway when I was about 19/20 - he was being advertised on a local "free/for sale" page because some child had got sick of him, so I took him and his cage despite only keeping rats usually. And then I promptly upgraded the cage because it was a tiny rotastak one, haha. I called him Rhubyn and he was a handsome little guy - long haired, brown/caramel/white coloured and a really sweet lad. He loved his treats and cuddles and when he died I ended up looking for another one from similar circumstances.

Re: Where did you get your first hamster?
I got my first hamster when I was around 8 years old. He was a male Syrian hamster called Nettle (who I purchased from Pets at Home). Unfortunately, he lived his whole life in a cage that couldn't have been more than 350 square inches and with a wheel that was most likely to small for him (he never used it). Now I am older and I did months of research before getting my current hamster who is a female Syrian called Pumpkin. She lives in a cage that is over 750 square inches of floor space and she has an 11 inch wheel and many other hides, chew toys and enrichment things. When I look back I can't help but feel guilty that Nettle had to live in a tiny cage his whole life so I make sure that spoil Pumpkin (I can't even walk past a pet shop with out buying something for her).
