Hi and welcome Izzy_The_Cookie, I think It depends what you are looking for from a hamster. If you would be happy with a hamster that has a high chance of being a hamster that you can only watch and maybe offer some food too then it would be fine.

If you wanted a hamster that you have a higher chance of being able to handle and interact with I would suggest a Syrian hamster.

These are only my opinions from my own experience. I think you will find each species has pros and cons, so I would be asking myself what do I want/expect from a hamster and is there a species that will match my expectations a little bit more than another. Also, bear in mind hamsters tend to do whatever they want to do regardless of what we expect from them

Have you watched this video by Victoria Raechel on it?

Hi & welcome to the forum

As Luna said a robo may not be the best choice if you want a ham you can handle & have out of cage interaction with, they can be very tame but it’s not easy for someone with no hamster experience to always manage this so it may just be a watch pet rather than one you can interact with.
I started with Russian hamsters, they are small but not so small & quite fast but a lot easier to handle than a Robo & I have found them easy to tame & they mostly enjoy interacting & out of cage time.
I’ve never had a Syrian but bear in mind that you would need a fair amount of space for a large cage with a Syrian, around 100x50cm, I use cages that are around 80x50cm for my Russian & Chinese hams, a robo would also need the same kind of space.
Also remember all hams are very individual so some can be shyer or more interactive regardless of species.

i think they can be a lovely first time hamster if you’re looking for more of a “watch” pet or if you’re generally a pretty busy person that just wants a pet to take care of. but if you’re looking for a hamster that you want to be able to interact with then i would recommend a hybrid dwarf. they tend to be very confident and have such large little personalities, without the added need of larger equipment such as a 12” wheel or large syrian sized toys. this isn’t to say robos can’t be tamed but they’re generally much harder to tame and there’s a higher chance of getting a ham who doesn’t want to be tame.

Thank You This is very helpful and I will take this into consideration when getting my ham! 😊😊😊

would a Syrian be a good pet for a 540 square in cage of floor space?

no, most syrians won’t be happy in 540 square inches

Zooplus do some great cages. Some examples are the barney for around 50 pounds and the alaska for around 30 pounds.

I agree with all the above - but it really comes down to whether you want a hamster to handle or not. Robos are notoriously difficult to handle and tame and are the most frightened of all the species as they are so tiny and easily injured. However I have had a robo (who never was tamed) and he brought great joy - he was out in his cage a lot - often during the day (when other species tend to come out only in the evening or at night) and we had really long conversations where he would sit and listen. There was definitely a bond and he communicated with me in many ways - looks behaviour etc. And was great fun to watch and very funny. But - he was very much "look but don't touch" and would run and hide and be terrified if you tried to get him out. It usually meant completely dismantling the contents of the cage to scoop him out for a taming session, which stressed him.

I think for a first hamster you would probably really want to hold them and have time and interaction out of the cage and the odd cuddle, and for that a Syrian is easier for handling and taming (in my opinion).

All hamsters need a good sized cage as even the smaller species can be very active - especially robos. But Syrians in particular need a really good sized cage, not just for spac for activity at night (when they're most active) but also because they need bigger items - bigger wheels, houses, tunnels and toys and a cage can very easily fill up. I can't quite imagine in square inches but for a Syrian you want a cage or tank that has a floor area of at least 80cm by 50cm continuous space (not two smaller areas joined together). And ideally a bit bigger than that. A robo would need a similar sized cage really.

The size of floor area is more important than height when it comes to cage size and in fact tall cages aren't good for hamsters who can fall and injure themselves. So a maximum height of about 46cm for a Syrian and 35 to 38 cm for a robo - depending on how much depth of bedding there is as that can effectively reduce the height when the bedding is deeper.

Which country are you in?
