Platforms like Ria has are fine- adds interesting routes and places to go. I have a rat tunnel tied to the roof which leads between two hanging sputniks so makes a roof run (and also stops them monkey barring across the roof and falling!). The main thing is to make sure they can’t fall onto anything hard or sharp from a height of more than about 20cm. So ideally you put any hard or sharp items under a shelf or on a shelf and have a good depth of substrate to cushion any blows.

I buy degus shelves and platforms, Trixie ladders and corner shelves from Amazon. There's a good variety of wooden platforms and shelves available as well including free standing ones.
You can also check on sites like Zooplus, Getzoo and Rodipet or make your own. I'm sure there are more sites but i can't think of them right now.
I also use inexpensive Ferplast houses minus the front panel as platforms for heavy things like a sand bath.

Which cage do you have? To think about shelves. I get some from Ranchhouse cages on ebay. I'll add a photo of my cage set up to show you what I mean about a roof run

Mines a handmade box cage, I’ll have a look on a few sites now. Thank you both so much for your help!

Your cage looks lovely, I’m not as creative as that lol and knowing me it’ll fall! I’m going to get some bits now!
