Default Hamster climbing curtains

My hamster isn’t a climber in her cage but she’s obsessed with climbing the curtains and she can climb to the top if I don’t catch her fast enough. She slides down sofas usually non stop that was her first obsession and now it’s running to the curtain and climbing it!! What is wrong with my hamster lol

She's a stunthamster, lol.

Joking aside, i'd move the curtains out of reach and put cushions around the sofa when she's free roaming.

She could lose her grip and fall doing herself some harm.

Ha ha sounds like my hamster I had 20 years ago! He used to climb the curtains and climb up the side of my bed, my bookcases, everywhere! He even put a massive hoard of his food inside my wardrobe. I didn't have the heart to clean it out so it just got bigger and bigger. I know that was probably not a good idea (the hoard in the wardrobe) but it was 20 years ago and I was very young. The hamster seemed happy.

Yes, I agree with Ria, I prob wouldn't let our new hamster climb curtains now. He has a playpen and hoards food in his cage only!! But I do know that some hamsters like to climb from my experience 20 years ago!

Do I get anything for her cage that she can climb on, not sure what lol. I’m glad she doesn’t try and climb the sides of her cage though meaning she’s happy in there. She just is crazy once she’s out and she’s very sociable, as soon as it’s 9 she’s waiting to come out and once she’s back in she wants to come out again, she stands in her sand bath waiting lol

She sounds a lovely hamster.

What kind of cage does she live in and what kind of enrichment does she already have?

I got very lucky to get such a social hamster that loves to come out. Never has bitten but you can’t stroke her as she never stops moving lol.

She’s in a handmade box cage, obviously big enough. She’s got a Trixie wheel I think the 12 inch. She’s got a plastic tunnel under all the bedding and two hides. Kitchen roll tube, her sand bath and some vegetable chews for her teeth. Wonder if there’s anything that she could climb safely.

Yes there is. One of my Syrians likes levels and things to climb on. A 55cm long Trixie ladder leads up to a corner shelf and from there he can go onto degus shelves and a wicker tunnel supported by a degus platform.
He's in the Alaska so everything's screwed onto the bars but should also work in a wooden box enclosure by drilling holes to feed the bolts through i would have thought.

They behave completely differently out of the cage to in it. Out of the cage they go into foraging mode and activity. The cage is their home and habitat and they get territorial about it and are often content to have a simple housekeeping routine in the cage - although they do like to forage a bit in there too so scattering a bit of hamster mix (as well as putting it in the bowl) helps with that. They like to rearrange the substrate, refurbish their nest, pouch nesting material and run in their wheel - they also like a shelf - something to sit on to have a wash or sit under (helps them feel secure). So their priority in the cage is protecting their nest and hoard and a bit of chilling. But yes once they get used to free roaming they want to keep doing it

Just because she climbs the curtains doesn’t mean she likes climbing- she’s just being active. We had one many years ago too that used to climb to the top and it was so funny seeing his head pop over the top. I had no idea back then it was dangerous and he could fall - luckily he never did but that can just drop (they’re not good at climbing down again). She’s just exploring to see where it goes- you can guarantee that even if they are in a nice big room they want to get out of the door and go further. Just contrariness really!

Personally I wouldn’t add climbing toys to a cage as there is a risk of fall and injury in the cage as well. A lot of cage toys get completely ignored as well as their priority in the cage is nesting, hoarding and their wheel. I would definitely have a shelf or platform though. In fact some hamsters don’t feel secure unless access to a platform is stable and secure (as opposed to rocking around and moving).
