Default New hamster.

Got new hamster.. On the Friday. Its only around 8 weeks ish old.

Seems slowy getting settled in.. Likes to run on the wheel all night. Etc. Though he's currently peeing in his nest.. Eating fine and drinking..

Going to try a potty in the corner hopefully he thinks that's a better spot.

Not to interested in me just yet. Put my hand in etc but more into his wheel lol.

Congratulations on the new hamster. Is he a Syrian or dwarf? I look forward to seeing pictures of him.

If he doesn't seem interested in you, but not afraid of you, that's partly a good thing, because it shows he isn't too concerned about your presence. The way to make yourself interesting to him is food basically, offer him lots of treats on your hand.

He is a syrian.. I do put food in my hand but just ignores it currenty. Just likes his wheel.. The most if I open the cage or even put my hand near the wheel he nornally keeps going.

Congratulations! Give him chance to adjust. It can take a couple of weeks for them to fully settle in a cage and best not to clean anything or move thigns during that time. He will be excited about his wheel. Sometimes they also run if they're a bit stressed (to run away from something?) But mostly for fun. It often settles down a bit after the novelty wears off.

After a couple of days you could try feeding him the odd treat through the bars as a start to taming/familiarising and keep talking to him so he gets familiar with your voice and presence.

Yeah I'm not cleaning anything really. Unless I find a poo for spot cleaning. Or something. Should I not clean his nest right away if he pees in it..

He wakes up around 10pm and wheels for hours. Then when I wake up he's sleeping.

He is eating and is hoarding small amount of food so I know not feed him for an other day or so.

He also poos on his wheel as I heard it flying around the wheel lol. Most flew of f on the ground though. Hoping after he gets older he will learn to do it somewhere more suitable lol.. I ain't concerned about the poo in the nest just the pee as you know why

He'll be fine for a couple of weeks Poos aren't that dirty really - like little seeds and not smelly - and can be left for a while as well. Sometimes they eat them which is normal. They have two stomachs and can redigest nutrients from their poops. If they start taking over then you could spot clean some

I should leave his nest for now, but adding a litter tray with sand may encourage him to use it. In a couple of weeks, if you need to remove his nest then try and leave a tiny bit of the old nest behind that isn't wet, even if slightly whiffy. And put a new pile of toilet paper strips out in the cage and he'll rebuild it.

yeah I know about leaving scent, I have ordered a potty thing that comes with a sample of clay litter I can try that if not then maybe ill try sand, but hopefully that's enough lol, but he is for sure peeing in the house he sleeps in, if you smell it you can smell the pee. I know poo is not that bad.

maybe ill have one with clay liter, one with sand, we see what he prefers.

can you suggest sand?

Clay litter isn't safe at all. It can basically block up the digestive system if ingested which is incredibly likely with hamsters, so you need to remove that now if it is in the cage and if not throw it out.

Children's play sand is the safest sand option though. You'll find information on the forum on how long to bake it and at what temperature, but that must be done to make it safe along with rinsing and sifting.

Nah I don't have it now, I only just ordered it,, think I read something about clay litter causing that, but I ordered it for the potty anyway, and was going to probably use sand anyway.

cant I use the sand from pets at home? don't really have the means to bake play sand... and Ive even read people saying play sand isn't that safe either, so it's kinda confusing

https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/p...-sand-15-litre

heard people saying they've changed and isn't as safe as much now but again get mixed signals.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-G...ucts/257501215

would this be good? BUT YOUR saying I have rinse and sift it too, sound like alot of effort... I only see some people baking it.

Chinchilla bathing sand is what most people use. I have used the hamster potty litter in the past- it is only dangerous if they eat it. Our hamster tried a bit but spat it out again (that’s before I knew about issues with it). Most people use sand because it’s safer. The tiny friends chinchilla bathing sand is fine if that’s what you have. I now buy a big bag of jr farm chinchilla sand ftom Zooplus as it works out cheaper and lasts for a very long time.
