Thank you Luna. Yes most are better for dwarf hamsters. I will have to see how big the hole is on the one I ordered and also can’t tell if it carries on being hollow above the hole or if it’s solid above.

I found the Wundapets mushroom. Apparently the diameter of the entrance is 5cm so a bit small for a large Syrian. Maybe ok for a smaller one.

I have one like you used to have, they ares so nice it’s a shame they stopped doing those but I meant this one.

I saw that one you got on amazon uk yesterday, they have a few I hadn’t seen before so it might be worth checking there again, I’ll see if I can find anything.
I ordered this one yesterday so I’ll have a better idea of size when it arrives today.
This is quite fun too!

How about pot from clay? Clay pots are very popular in my country. I am planning to get one for my hamster.

Just something i wanted to mention about ceramic hides:

Before giving it to a hamster, always check the inside for any rough edges in the glaze. One of my Wundapets mushrooms had a rough edge inside which i had to smooth down first with my electric pedicure file.

Recently i exchanged a watermelon ceramic hide for the same reason. A local petshop currently stocks Critter's Choice ceramic hides but i had to check a few to find a smooth one.

Thank you all. Yes I saw the shark one cypher! I was in two minds - it would be big enough though. But quite like the more enclosed ones. I think the strawberry one would just be big enough but the larger ones have more room to do things inside or move a bit. I hadn’t thought of that particular Rodipet one - has assumed they were quite large but in checking not much bigger than the old tree trunk one. That is a good possibility- even if a bit expensive. Wouldn’t be able to see much of him in there but he’d probably like it . I suspect the one I ordered may be a bit small too but we’ll see - it could still be an out of cage toy.

Ria thank you yes some of these things aren’t that well made. Easier to sand wood but sharp bits on ceramic would be a no no. Hope the one from Germany is ok as it would be a pain to return!

Tai - thanks! Yes a terracotta flower pot is an option as well or any clay pot with a suitable opening. I like the flower pot idea on its side idea for substrate level - this one is to sit on a shelf. And be a bit enclosed.

I’ve been having some much needed retail therapy the last few days and planning to upgrade Pickle. He needs a bigger house as he is so huge now and a bigger house won’t fit in the mickey xl and still leave him enough space. The Barney doesn’t work for him and I’m getting another Savic plaza for him and a large labyrinth house like Moo has (who is smaller!). And his wheel needs replacing as well - he has hammered the wood one so it’s scraping now!

So can’t spend too much on a ceramic hide but need a few extra things for the cage and they are always popular.

I got my strawberry one today & although I checked the measurements it’s still looks smaller than I expected, quite tiny barely big enough for Russian probably but ok for a Chinese so those definitely wouldn’t work for a Syrian! I think most on amazon are a similar size.
I was wondering if maybe you wanted something where you could see more of him than with the rodipet one but my hams have loved the smaller one & you can always pop the lid off to see what he’s up to!

All that ham shopping sounds like my kind of therapy lol! I’m sure he’ll really appreciate it too.

Cage has arrived but waiting for the house so it’ll be a while before moving him. With the tree trunk hide it is just a round circle and Newt used to sit with his face looking out which was cute - the terracotta one is a bit more enclosed - but still nice. Thinking ...... I did have another log hide as well that Newt had. A bit smaller but fine - can’t find it. Maybe that got broken too.

Why don't you get a couple of cheap Critter's Choice ones as a back up, the larger size. They're only £5.99 and come in a few pastel colours. They're not very exciting though.

I used to put tissue in the ceramic hides but they don't seem to like it and Edwina chucked it out. I think they like the cool and feel of the ceramic. Ozzy's watermelon is now a fresh food stall.

Who brakes all the ceramic hides? Not the hamsters, lol?
