Default Nocturnal hamster as a pet?

Out of curiosity, why do YOU choose nocturnal hamster as a pet?

Personally, I just really love hamsters and I’m not sure why, but I’m also naturally a night owl so it wasn’t that big of an adjustment for me to be able to care for one

They are mainly crepuscular rather than nocturnal. So they come out in twilight - the evening and early morning to forage usually as well as being awake at night - but usually not all night - they have naps as well during the night. Their circadian rhythms can be affected by our artifical light in homes though, so with lights on in the house they may not come out till lights out sometimes. Some are out and about in cages early evening (especially if you have a set feeding time).

Why choose one? They are a well known popular pet, fairly easy to look after, but they are also gentle creatures and funny and entertaining with real personalities and they can bond with a human owner.

For me personally - it is also the only pet I haven't been allergic to!

I chose hamsters as a pet because i like hamsters, nocturnal ones, crepuscular ones and daytime ones.

Also, i like the peace and quiet of the night when i have time to watch and play with my hamsters. It totally frustrates me when my daytime hamster asks to come out to play and i can't give her the time because i have to go to work!

We work all day and so are only around in the evenings so I never felt it would be fair to have a dog etc. and leave it all day. I love their personalities, creating a whole habitat for them and that they're just getting up once I"ve finished dinner and am sitting down to unwind and have ham playtime! Also, that they're an often-overlooked creature - which deserves so much more respect as a pet and my rescues have been to genuinely give the critters a better existence than they'd otherwise have had as children's 'toys'...

One of the main reasons I went back to keeping hamsters several years ago was because I was only allowed caged pets where I lived at the time.

Most of my hamsters tend to be awake in the evenings rather than throughout the night and to be honest that's the best time for me to interact with them. I also find though that my Chinese are often awake at about 5-6am too which means that I get to watch them on the odd occasion I have to get up early.

I started with a hamster because I thought it would be good pet with not too much responsibility, since they don't live long and when I go on holiday I can always take them somewhere else. And I'd had one as a child.

Once I had one then I discovered she fitted in well with my life - asleep while I was out at work and getting up and playing in the evening. And I've just fallen in love with hamsters.

I've become allergic to dogs and cats, so that's part of it.
Oreo, my dwarf is over 2 now, but in his younger days, he was often up during the day - running on his wheel and begging treats.
My Syrian, Bean doesn't get up until I turn out the light, but he's usually awake in the mornings, and we have some play-time then. I've thought about getting him up earlier in the evening, and I think he'd be amenable enough, but I'm usually engaged in something, so am happy to let him sleep.
It'd be nice if they were always up during the day, ready to interact, but I don't hafta feel guilty about not taking them for walks, or having to schedule significant time for them.
When Oreo was more active, it was perfect; I'd see Oreo a lot during the day, then Bean at night and morning.
Someday, I might consider gerbils, since I've read that they're often up during the day. Probably still have a Syrian, tho'.

Just to add - Robotivski hamsters tend to be up and about during the day as well - any time with that species.
