Foster hamsters
Yesterday i collected an unsexed litter of four dwarf babies who were living in a cage smaller than my transport box.
Going by the squeaking and hissing they were desperate for their own space. With only three places in the rescue i fostered the fourth until one becomes available.
Bob lives in the Samla i keep for situations like that. He is small and zooms around like a Robo. Wheel, sand bath, toys etc are all things new to him and he uses them all. He runs around the cage and seems to love the fact that he is able to run. Sometimes he just sits, in the sand bath or on the bridge and stares into space or nods off and i wonder what he is thinking.
They all look a bit dishevelled but luckily we haven't noticed any bite marks.
My main task now is not to get attached because i know the rescue only lets hamsters go to suitable homes and i may need this Samla for other hamsters who need a safe place to stay.

Re: Foster hamsters
He is gorgeous! Unfortunately I don't have any spaces at the minute so distance isn't an issue I need to consider! I hope he finds a loving home soon

Re: Foster hamsters
Bravo to you for being a foster Mom for this little Ham. Fostering is not for the weak hearted as Foster Failures become abundant if you can't refrain. However Fostering is also a wonderful thing and I encourage Those who have the time and space to do at some time.
Yes you cry as they leave for their new homes partly because they are leaving and partly in joy as you helped save a Hammy's life and help a new family be able to enjoy a well tamed and healthy Hamster.

Re: Foster hamsters
Fostering is tricky but i got motivated because there were too many hamsters and too little space in my apartment. I am also happy to say most of them have at least the bare minimum. Its hard to get people in my country educated because they are viewed as "just hamsters".

Re: Foster hamsters
I applaud everybody who fosters hamsters. It is such a kind and selfless act and as a hamster lover I am grateful there are people out there who do it.

my lord he is gorgeous, you're so wonderful to be giving these hammies a second chance to go to good homes, I would take him in a heart beat if I didn't live so far away I really hope you find him a good home.

Re: Foster hamsters
Thank you all.
Its the rescue who is going to find him a good forever home not me. I'm only a volunteer who collects hamsters and guinea pigs to take to the rescue and makes the odd bin cage. It is very rewarding and makes me very happy when i collect a hamster living in a tiny and bare cage and then hear of the same hamster living it up in a Barney and getting lots of attention. Living the life they deserve.
Bob is a little devil. Late last night he walked into a mug and i took him out of his cage, put him on my lap so he can start getting used to humans. Bob darted off my lap onto the floor and legged it. I had absolutely no intentions of introducing him to free roaming at this early stage. He zoomed around and obviously enjoyed a proper run while i sat on the floor wondering how on earth i'm going to catch a very fast and tiny pitch black hamster in a darkish room with black motorcycle gear on the floor. He wasn't scared and approached me sniffing but everytime i offered up the mug he took off again. I managed to corner him eventually and caught him with the mug. Bob went straight back into his cage and had a snack before running on his wheel.
His flying saucer wheel was wonky so i bought him a new one today. I took the wonky one out and put the new one in but had to move some substrate out of the way. Suddenly there was this almighty angry screech! I didn't know that he was sleeping in this particular heap of Kaytee. I must have woken him by mistake in the middle of the day and he soon let me know that this was not acceptable.
He's a feisty little fellow.
