Yes, but we are absolute rubbish at rehoming.

If everything goes according to plan, Rupert will be adopted this week. I woke him for a health check and he was furious as you can tell by his angry face. He had a wash afterwards but still had a grumpy face on.

I've been mostly hanging out on the gerbil forum, but have to say Jack is pretty cute (nice job of getting him 'adopted', haha), and Rupert's frowny face is hysterical!

Rupert the little rascal has well and truly landed on his paws and moved into an enormous Plueschraupe inspired habitat.

As per usual, we could not cope with the foster tank in the lounge without a Robo lodging in it. We talk to it and go to feed it even when there's no one there...

No Robos in the small ads but three of them in the blue cross adoption tanks. I adopted the one that had been there the longest. A little girl. Her age was "estimated" at 5 months and the background information was non existent.

We call her Pixie.

I thought her nails were too long so i gave them a trim in the safety of the hall before putting her back in the tank.

Ria, she's absolutely gorgeous!

But how do you do it? Hold a robo, I mean? I've reached the stage with my robo where she will take a treat from my fingers (after giving it some careful thought and approaching very cautiously) and then scamper away. I also offer her food from the Rodipet scoop, and she enjoys that and will sit nibbling from it for a short while. But even the lightest finger to give her the teeniest hint of a stroke while she is thus engaged - and she bolts! Even a sudden movement will make her startle and run.

The way i see it is that sometimes it simply has to be done for a health check or in Pixie's case, a nail trim.

I tame, hold and check hamsters outside their cages because their homes are their territories.

Pixie run into her sandbath which is a bonbon jar and i put a small hamster transport ball with the same size opening containing treats in front of it. Pixie walked in to get the treat and i put the lid on to carry her upstairs. I sat in a safe area with a flannel on my lap and gently tipped Pixie out of the ball and picked her up inside the flannel. I held her in my palm, opened the flannel, picked her up and held her as shown in the photo.
Robos stay still and don't wriggle like other hamsters. I think it's a defence mechanism because they are so tiny. "I'm not moving so you can't see and eat me".

Obviously, they vary depending on their personalities. I chat to them and gently stroke their heads while holding them. Rupert looked angry and would squeak at the slightest stroke but stopped when i stopped stroking him. I stroked him once more and he promptly squeaked again so i skipped that.
Pixie was more tolerant and i stroked her even while she sat in my hand. It's a good way for me to assess foster hamsters personalities which is important when rehoming.

Personally, i think the key for physical interaction is to do it on neutral ground.

Peppe has been reserved. He turned out to be a delightful hamster. Tame and playful, loves wheels and climbs all over me.
